Far From Perfect

Please contact your local newspaper editor if you want to read Far From Perfect's column in your hometown paper.
A Midwestern boomer with the rare ability to write front-porch columns that put people at ease -- that's Mimi Kopulos. Think Erma Bombeck with a wedding ring on her left hand and a diamond nose stud in her right nostril.

Her experiences are atypical and topical. Her columns bridge the generation gap. She writes about finding humor in life's imperfections.

Kopulos grew up the only girl in a family of five brothers. Maybe that's why "Far From Perfect" draws readers from both sides of the gender divide. Instead of trying to win the battle of the sexes, its author only wants a cease-fire long enough to slip another sneak purchase past her husband.

She attracts readers in big cities and small towns. She is less obsessed with terror alerts than with bats in the toilet and arranging furniture in the middle of the night. She builds intimacy by sharing real-life stories.

In the early 1990s, her parents and three of her brothers died tragically within months of each other. Shortly after, she and her husband had their third child. These events turned the page to a new generation of thoughts and life experiences.

As a freelancer, she wrote the "Person to Person" column for the Kansas City Star. Her Star Magazine feature "Ageless Love," about playing matchmaker to her widowed mother-in-law, led the Star to create the "Love Story" column that appears Sundays in the FYI section. Mimi was assigned to write the weekly column. Her work has also appeared in CITY Magazine, Frontrunner magazine and Kansas City Magazine. With a background in marketing and advertising, she also has written for numerous trade and advertising publications.

In the summer of 2000, Mimi went back to college, where she wrote about what it was like to attend classes with students the same age as her older daughter and son. She received a Missouri Writers Guild Award from the University of Missouri and a B.A. in English with an emphasis in creative writing from the University of Missouri in 2006.

The late bloomer gleams, "I'm just getting started."
