It opened on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre but moved to the Mark Hellinger Theatre in 1962. In all, it ran for 1,443 performances. A London production opened at the Palace Theatre on May 18, 1961, and it ran for 2,385 performances. There was also a Broadway revival in 1998. As European empires disintegrated in the 20th century, the world saw dozens of new nations. But some nations went the other way. Sikkim decided in 1975 to give up its independence and become part of India. The Buddhist saint Guru Rinpoche had founded Sikkim in the eighth century.
