Wednesday, November 25Mortified by reports of famine in Ethiopia, Bob Geldof and Ultravox's Midge Ure wrote "Do They Know It's Christmas," and 25 years ago today, some of Britain's top stars recorded the song at Trevor Horn's SARM West studio. Bob George flew in on the Concorde, and Phil Collins provided the drums. The success inspired an American charity video, as well as videos from countries around the world. Born Pedro Flores, a Santa Barbara hotel bellhop named Tony Flor was playing with a yoyo from his native Philippines. Curious guests started asking him about it, and this inspired him to start selling them. Toy impresario Donald Duncan bought the company and created a national fad for the toys, which were made in a factory in Luck, Wisc. The town put up a sign calling itself Yo-yo Capital of the World, which ironically contributed to Duncan losing the yoyo trademark He's the clown in the box who emerges when you play Pop Goes the Weasel.
