PERSONALITY OF A PLANET: SATURN: The most remarkable and spectacular feature of the sixth planet of our solar system is a fascinating system of rings that encircle it. More than 1,000 bands of what are believed to be ice crystals braid into intricate patterns as they rotate around the yellow planet. I like to think of these rings as the rings inside the wood of an old tree trunk — markings that indicate the wisdom that comes with age. When Saturn is personified, he is a white-haired elder, Father Time. Once upon a Greek myth, Saturn was a god who was warned that he'd be destroyed by his own children. Therefore, he devoured everyone who was born. However, one baby, hidden by his mother, was able to escape Saturn's paranoid wrath — this was Zeus. Later, Zeus overthrew his father and claimed his throne. Saturn became bitter, strict and old. The story seems a harsh depiction of Saturn, but as it is with all cranky elders, in order to benefit from his wisdom, you have to be tough enough to get to know him. He stands for discipline. Without discipline, no earthly endeavor will bear fruit.
