Candlenut (333-070)

If the privacy of a well-isolated master suite is important to you, consider the one-story, 2465-square-foot Candlenut (333-070). The master suite and the two secondary bedrooms couldn't be much farther apart. This arrangement allows teenagers to crank the volume up a few decibels before the adults yell at them to turn it down.

Family living areas are at the center. Formal spaces, living room and dining room all face the street, while the family room and kitchen extend along the back. Both the family room and the living room are large. Vaulted ceilings and a wealth of windows make them seem even larger. In the family room, a fireplace punches out one of the back corners and sliding glass doors open onto a custom-shaped deck.

The family room could be more fully enclosed, if desired, by adding a wall parallel to the basement stairs and creating a corridor between the nook and bedrooms. Add a big-screen TV and speakers in the four corners, and you've got a hi-tech home theater. Or you could just as easily go the other way with this space and knock out the wall that separates it from the nook to create a greater sense of openness.

Skylights and another set of sliders make the nook an attractive place to begin the day. The large country kitchen comes equipped with a number of popular amenities: a garden window, pantry, eating bar, trash compactor, and a built-in range, oven and dishwasher.

The dining room is close but well-separated from the kitchen.

A comfortable utility room, complete with a deep utility sink and a long counter, is close to the kitchen, master suite and garage. The garage has a long workbench with overhead cabinets for keeping household maintenance equipment and supplies organized and out-of-sight.

Luxuries in the master suite include a large walk-in closet and a private bathroom with twin basins and a huge two-person spa tub that could have two showerheads.
