Minnie's ChickensOne of the healthiest things you can do is grow your own vegetables. It's fresher, cheaper and local. And here's a similar trend: raising chickens! In fact, Yahoo! reports that searches for "chicken coop plans" were recently up to 225 percent. This brings us to Minnie Rose Lovgreen. Minnie raised chickens on a dairy farm outside of Seattle for 60 years, learning everything there is to know about chicks, eggs, brooding hens and laying hens. She always wanted to write a book on chickens, but she never found the time. Then when Minnie was 86, lying in a hospital room, friend and neighbor, Nancy Rekow, showed up with a tape recorder, saying, "Minnie Rose, now we're going to write your book." The result was "Minnie Rose Lovgreen's Recipe for Raising Chickens." Minnie left us in 1975, but her hand-lettered book with home-grown illustrations is in its third edition, advising a new generation of chicken farmers.
