Relive World War II With 'Heroes in the Sky'

DEVELOPER: GameUS
PUBLISHER: GamesCampus
SYSTEM: Windows 7/Vista/XP
PRICE: Free download plus micro-transactions
ESRB RATING: Teen
REVIEW RATING: 3.5 stars (out of 5)

GamesCampus invites budding pilots to fly the unfriendly skies over Europe and the Pacific Ocean in the action-packed flying game, "Heroes in the Sky." This unusual massively multiplayer online game is set in World War II and lets pilots from around the world fight through a wide variety of realistic wartime scenarios using authentic planes from the era.

Most modern flying games don't require much skill because they consist of little more than locking onto enemies and firing homing missiles. On the other hand, wartime dog-fighting requires pilots to lead their targets and anticipate their moves, which is much more unpredictable! Although "Heroes in the Sky" isn't a true flight simulator, it still provides an enjoyable melange of World War II-era airplanes and exciting game play to satisfy most fans of flight.

Promising pilots begin their career in aviation by choosing to fight for the Axis or Allies. Then it's time to learn the basics by flying through several tutorial missions. After that, players are free to accept missions and either tackle them alone or with friends. Countless PVE and PVP missions are at the player's disposal, and there are even larger raid-type scenarios available for skilled pilots.

Early missions are fairly easy, but later ones can be extremely challenging, especially when there are dozens of enemies to eliminate. I like the ability to choose different aircraft — such as fighters that excel in dogfights and bombers that level enemy installations — for different missions. Various performance-enhancing parts are also available to be purchased or earned.

"Heroes in the Sky" is more than a year old, but a new content pack titled "Might of the Luftwaffe" adds welcome improvements including higher resolutions and new raids to the game. What's not to like about free content and improvements?

There's a certain disconnect that comes with fighting alongside other players in airplanes as opposed to human avatars, but that doesn't stop "Heroes in the Sky" from being a blast to play!

'Invizimals: Shadow Zone'

DEVELOPER: Novarama
PUBLISHER: Sony
SYSTEM: Sony PSP
PRICE: $39.99
ESRB RATING: E10+
REVIEW RATING: 3.0 stars (out of 5)

Augmented reality is the new focus of portable gaming, and I don't mean the kind where people are glued to their smartphones all day long.

No, what I'm referring to is the combination of video game characters and items with real-world backgrounds in real time to create a unique gaming experience. Confused? This review of Sony's latest PSP title, "Invizimals: Shadow Zone," will help shed some light on the subject.

The story picks up where the original game's events ended and lets players guide Jazmin, Keni and Dawson as they discover new Invizimals linked to ancient civilizations. Soon, the Alliance, which is a worldwide sect of righteous Invizimal hunters, discovers that the dangerous Shadow Zone will be unlocked if the wrong person starts using Invizimals for evil. Now it's up to players to help the Alliance gather over 100 hidden creatures and take them into battle!

Using the PSP camera included with the game, players must search different areas of the real world to find hidden Invizimals. The PSP screen shows the real world, and players are told what to look for (usually a color) in order to find the next creature. Then they must lay a special card down on a horizontal surface and go through mini-games to unlock that particular Invizimal.

Every creature discovered can then be used to battle other creatures in tournaments or fight clubs. Even though they differ greatly in appearance, all Invizimals have the same basic move set governed by their stamina. In addition, offensive and defensive items can be used during battle to gain an advantage.

I found the creature collection to be the most enjoyable aspect of "Invizimals: Shadow Zone." Combat is fun, but using certain special moves can 'confuse' the camera recognition system. I also don't like how lengthy and cheesy the live-action video sequences are that tell the story, but I'm sure kids won't mind.
