Americans on Wheels: Long before Lance Armstrong and his heroic struggle to become a Tour de France champ, another American, Greg LeMond, completed a heroic struggle to become not only a Tour de France champ, but the first American champ. After winning his first Tour de France, his brother-in-law accidentally shot him while turkey hunting. Despite still having 37 shotgun pellets in his body, he went on to win the race two more times.

Name That Chimp: The word "chimpanzee" is actually from the Angolan Bantu for "mock man." The second syllable of that name gave us the genus name Pan, which includes the chimp and the bonobo, which is a pygmy chimp.

The chimp is Pan troglodytes, and troglodytes are primitive cave people. And, as it happens, troglodytes is also a genus name for the wren. Oh ... some people think chimps should be moved into genius Homo, along with us.

Which of these is not a meaning of "duff"?

A) A curranty Scottish pudding

B) Everything that collects on the forest floor

C) A slang for the rear end

D) Small flakes of skin fallen from the scalp

Previous answer: The Rhode Island red is the state bird of Rhode Island.
