You often hear about people banging on the door to join the European Union. The former Warsaw Pact countries have scrabbled to join, and Turkey is in the middle of somewhat acrimonious talks to join the club. But one country has left the EU. In 1985, Greenland gave up its membership card in a dispute over fishing rights, which is rather remarkable, since Greenland is essentially part of Denmark, which remains a member.

Paul Giamatti is an acclaimed actor. But his father was famous, as well. He was Bart Giamatti, the baseball commissioner. The elder Giamatti had been president of Yale, where he was known for being tough with the union. This impressed the baseball honchos, but Bart Giammati died of a heart attack just six months into his term, and only eight days after banishing Pete Rose from baseball.

Paul's brother Marcus, also an actor, threw out the first pitch in the following World Series in the commissioner's honor.
