NOTE: All covered prime-time shows are on holiday hiatus.
That's what friends are for. “How I Met Your Mother,” the CBS hit sitcom, was in danger of being canceled because its star, Jason Segel, did not want to do a ninth year. The ninth year is very important for syndication, as nine years is what most shows need to get those big syndication bucks. All the other stars, including Neil Patrick Harris, were willing to do one more season.
Over the weekend, Segel gave the cast and crew an early Christmas present. He decided to re-sign. It is said one of the reasons is that the cast has become close friends -- although maybe the almost million dollars per episode also had something to do with it.
Bah Humbug to ABC. When it canceled “666 Park Avenue,” network officials said they would air the remaining episodes so the viewers would know what the show was all about. They have changed their mind. No more “666 Park Avenue” for us. That's a big mistake, and not just because I want to know what the heck is going on.
Why will anyone invest in a future continuing series if they will not get to see the end result because of cancellation? When the set was destroyed in hurricane Sandy, no one expected the low-rated show to go on. Network officials said they would rebuild the set. No one believed that. They did say they would air the remaining episodes that would explain the dark happenings in the posh Manhattan apartment building. Instead, they will be running episodes of “Don't Trust the B- in Apartment 23.”
ABC also claims they will air “The Last Resort” final episodes. It is hard to trust anything they say. Perhaps they mean what they say at the time and then change their mind.
TNT has decided to cancel “Leverage.” The announcement was made on Dec. 21. The quirky crime drama starring Timothy Hutton had its last original outing on Christmas Day.
“Downton Abby” starts its third seas on PBS on Jan. 6. If you are enthralled by the dashing Matthew Crawley -- who isn't? -- you better watch this year. Dan Stevens, who plays him, has decided not to sign on for the fourth season. The third season of “Downton” already played on BBC. If you can't wait for the series to begin in the States, you catch some of the episodes on YouTube and also some written summaries on the Internet.
