Kids' Summer Essentials

Summer is a kid's favorite time of year. And it's the best opportunity for moms and dads who want easy clothing options that are ready to mix, match and go. This season, there's plenty of summer style for children who like to emulate the styles worn by "big" brothers and sisters.

But let's face it: Kids grow out of their clothes faster than you can say, "We're headed to the pool." While they definitely need durable duds at prices parents love, they still crave clothes that are fun and fashionable.

Here are the top 10 budget-conscious summer essentials that will give your kids plenty of fashion personality:

— Bikinis and board shorts. This is one time in life when girls can wear any kind of bikini and look great. Little girls will love the cool swimwear that blooms with colorful flowers and easily layers with shorts, skirts and dresses.

Ditto for the little guys who go for longer board shorts in graphic prints, stripes and plaids. For beach bunnies of all sizes, stop by The Children's Place for a colorful supply of summer styles. The red, white and blue collection is a patriotic inspiration. Visit www.thechildrensplace.com for more ideas.

— Graphic print tees. We all know kids enjoy expressing their own opinions, and what better way to do it than to let them pick out their own T-shirts with attitude? The "old" vintage cartoons, surf motifs and tropical flowers are some of this year's favorite graphics. Watch for sleeveless "muscle" shirts to be a big hit for the guys. For a large selection of screen-printed tees, check out Sears (www.sears.com).

— The short stuff. It's the cargo pedal pushers, the knit skort, the tiered boho skirt and the five-pocket shorts that make hot summer days cool for girls. For guys, it's cargo shorts and the longer jammer shorts that are chillin'. Macy's (www.macys.com) has a great selection of boys' and girls' short apparel.

— Getting a leg up. One of the most popular trends for girls is an easy look to pull together that can be dressed up or down. Pair knit leggings or shorter bike shorts (purple is the color of the moment) with a swingy baby doll top or dress. And for even more trendy style, check out the ombre look for little hombres.

— Dressing the part. Dresses for girls are easy and breezy this summer with lots of grown-up style.

From sequined maxi dresses to crochet-trimmed halters to floral baby dolls, there are many ways to play dress up.

— Where's Marco? Polo, that is. You can never have enough of these popular knit shirts, Mom. A classic for kids (and adults), the colorful striped polos are perfect for layering over T-shirts and shorts; a great item that's always appropriate for summer camp. For more tips on what to pack for your kids going to camp, go to J.Crew's Crewcuts list at www.jcrew.com.

— Bling it. Girls just want to have fun this summer, and there's no better way than with playful accessories sparkling with gems and jewels. From laceless sneakers to straw cowboy hats to embroidered caps to beaded hair twisties, there are lots of ways for kids to shine in the summer sun. Target (www.target.com) has accessories for kids from their favorite "characters."

— Steppin' out. The summer shoe show for kids is all about bright color — from rainbow high-top sneakers to neon flip-flops to funky Mary Janes for girls to fisherman sandals and retro-printed flip-flops for boys. For colorful kids' rain boots, go to www.walmart.com.

—The big cover up. The clothes (and, of course, your kids) may be the cutest things on the beach, but allowing little ones to become sunburned is entering dangerous water. Protect delicate skin with bucket hats, caps and hoodie cover-ups. Don't forget frequent applications of sunscreen! One of my favorite new products from California Baby (www.californiababy.com) contains both 30 SPF sunscreen and an insect repellant: the Citronella Bug Blend.

— Hot babes. For those adorable kings and queens of the crib, there are many ways to stock up on style this summer. The cool "onesies" bodysuits in soft knits are a staple for newborns in hot months — the perfect underlayer for pull-on skirts and shorts. Check out Gap's new organic baby collection at www.gap.com. A bodysuit with your baby's own astrological sign is sure to make him or her a style star.
