Perlman Grateful Amid 'Anarchy,' 'Hellboy,' 'Mutants' Work/Jerry O'Connell Loving Family Life, But …

Ron Perlman's into some pretty interesting double duty this week, doing his promotional bit for his "Mutant Chronicles" flick that opens tomorrow (4/24) while preparing to start second season shooting of his FX "Sons of Anarchy" series on Monday (4/27).

"I'm boning up on my motorcycle skills, getting all tatted(cq) up and badass," he cheerfully reports, referring to his role as president of the titular motorcycle gang in the critically hailed drama that essentially sets Shakespeare's "Hamlet" in the biker world.

The long days and physicality required of the 59-year-old star are demanding, but he notes that "Love conquers all. I do love what I do. I'm really lucky I hung in there. There were some really lean times. I'm enjoying the activity of it now. I'm glad I can stay in shape to enjoy the fruits."

Those include his $260-million-grossing "Hellboy" movies. As far as a third, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is currently busy with "The Hobbit." But after that? "I haven't heard anything yet, but I wouldn't be surprised either way," says Perlman. "It's usually a question of economics. I think the dust is settling on the 'Hellboy 2' experience; it had its DVD run, now it's about to have its cable run. Then they'll make an assessment whether it's economically feasible to do another one. I'm always ready, certainly, if Guillermo feels like he wants to do it."

As far as "Mutant Chronicles," in which he stars with pal Thomas Jane, Perlman observes, "Outwardly, this looks like a big sort of one-dimensional, studio tentpole movie. It's a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world filled with mutants — the typical, comic book-oriented outward trappings. The execution, the telling of the story is where I got sucked in — looking hundreds of years ahead into a future where the world is divvied up into four corporations."

THREE GIRLS TO ONE GUY: Jerry O'Connell has a small role in the Beyonce-Idris Elba thriller "Obsessed," opening tomorrow (4/24), in which Ali Larter plays a stalker whose presence threatens to turn their lives upside down — or worse. "It catches you," O'Connell declares. "I play Idris's coworker, I sort of know about his situation. Everybody is sort of suspect."

Jerry's also in the big screen comedy "Baby on Board," "with Heather Graham and John Corbett.

We shot that in Chicago and had lots of fun," he says.

That was when his wife, Rebecca Romijn, was pregnant with their twin daughters, who are now nearly 4 months old. "Rebecca was very emotional — getting pregnant, you're dealing with a lot of hormones and stuff. It was probably safe for me to get a little bit of distance, to not be in her range," he jokes.

Seriously, Jerry makes it clear he's crazy about his three girls, and finds family life "is great." Of the babies, he says, "One looks just like me, kind of round with a lot of brown hair. The other is really skinny and blond. Rebecca was really skinny as a kid.

"But there have been drawbacks. Our dogs have been very jealous, actually. One of them has been going in the house every day. He pees while looking at me."

Maybe we should put Jerry together with Animal Planet's Victoria Stilwell — as in the casting call put out for celebrities with dog problems we told you about the other day.

SOMETHING NEW: Canadian actress, Martha MacIsaac, whose claim to fame was playing Michael Cera's love interest in "Superbad," is now delving into action movies as she's starring alongside Val Kilmer in the upcoming movie "The Thaw." "It's an eco-thriller. There's a global warming specialist played by Val Kilmer, and I play his estranged daughter," she tells us. "He discovers these bugs in the Arctic that are going to pose a threat to the world. They haven't been around for thousands of years but are there now because of global warming. Once we get there, all hell breaks loose." Getting the chance to branch out into a new genre has been a real treat for the young actress. "I got to do a lot of action-type stuff. I shot guns and drove around on ATVs," says MacIsaac, who also recently starred in the thriller "The Last House on the Left." "I would have never seen that coming, but these opportunities presented themselves, and it's been exciting to do something different."

AND THEN HE SAID: Jonathan Bennett is throwing some pretty big praise toward his "Van Wilder" co-star Kristin Cavallari, who got her start on a reality show. "She's one of my favorite actresses alive," claims Bennett of the "Laguna Beach" gal. What!?! "It's not even for her acting, though she's a great actress, she's just so much fun to work with. We could not get through a scene without laughing." OK, well, that makes much more sense!
