Corey Haim Forgotten as Public Watches Other Drug-Bedeviled StarsNext week — March 10 to be exact — marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Corey Haim, who was snubbed by both the Screen Actors Guild and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, left out of their In Memoriam retrospectives on the SAG Awards and the Oscars. It's hardly the ending fans would have expected back when Haim and his best pal, Corey Feldman, hit a stratospheric level of fame as vampire-fighting teens in "The Lost Boys." But, the years after his '80s fan frenzy heyday saw Haim addicted to crack, enduring bankruptcy, a drug-induced stroke, 15 stints in rehab and industry peers dropping him due to his drug use. Even Feldman finally had to turn away — after Haim's mini-comeback with their "The Two Coreys" reality show crumbled under the weight of his addiction to prescription pills. Haim reportedly started drinking beer while on the set of "Lucas" at age 14 and tried marijuana while making "The Lost Boys." He and Feldman got close during production, in fact, because they were excluded from the "adult" parties that were going on every night on the picture and found their own fun. In his youth, Haim's cast mates included the notoriously drug-bedeviled Robert Downey Jr., Gary Busey and ... Charlie Sheen. Some role models. Now the anniversary of Haim's passing is pretty much being forgotten while the media and public are caught up in the antics of Sheen. And jokes continue to fly about the self-destructive Lindsay Lohan, who is being quoted as hoping to win back the trust of Hollywood. It can be done — as Downey, Drew Barrymore and others can attest. BACK TO THE WEST: The 1993 "Tombstone," with Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, was certainly one of the high watermarks of Kilmer's checkered career.
Despite a spotty record of on-set behavior, and a physical appearance that's not what it once was, Kilmer certainly has a full dance card, with a string of back-to-back movies ahead. Those include Francis Ford Coppola's original gothic horror thriller, "Twixt Now and Sunrise," and the film Kilmer has been developing as a directorial vehicle for himself, "Mark Twain and Mary Baker Eddy." Kilmer has been busy in Toronto as of late, filming a follow-up to the 2008 mini-series he made with Stephen Dorff, "XIII: The Conspiracy." THE BIG-SCREEN SCENE: Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire" action/thriller with Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and Antonio Banderas is due in theaters April 22 — so a casting notice for the film caught our eye. They're looking for a Latina model to play Banderas' girlfriend. She has to be 26-35 years old and be willing to be filmed topless, sunbathing and relaxing with him. This strikes us as an odd last-minute addition, but hey, who are we to question art? Rosanna Arquette is in preproduction on a feature called "Hemlock Drive" — which the actress-filmmaker intends to direct herself. Arquette is planning a late spring/early summer production start for the tale about a sprightly, fun-loving and eccentric woman who guilt trips her adult children into coming to visit her, not letting on about just how serious is her worsening health condition.
