Ask Stacy - Week of November 27, 2010DEAR STACY: I just hate the car commercials this time of year that make you feel like a failure if you can't go out and get your sweetie a new set of wheels — no, make that an especially expensive set of wheels — for Christmas. The worst offender of all is the Toyota Highlander ad with the snotty little boy who says that just because you're a parent doesn't mean you have to be "lame." Are the idiots responsible for these ads completely oblivious to how bad the economy is out here? Where should I write to complain? — Had Enough, St. Louis DEAR HAD ENOUGH: You're not alone. Those spots make lots of viewers fightin' mad. As AutoTrader.com reports, "consumers quickly started a backlash against the ads on chat boards, blogs, social networks and even Toyota's own YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/highlander. ... Many are calling for Toyota to pull the ads from Saatchi & Saatchi Los Angeles." There's a Facebook page called "Toyota's Highlander Commercial Sucks," which you can "like." Or there's the straightforward "Email Toyota" option on Toyota's website. DEAR STACY: What's Rick Fox going to do next? He was robbed on "Dancing With the Stars" — eliminated ahead of contestants who weren't nearly as good, IMHO. — Tara L., Brooklyn, N.Y. DEAR TARA: Many people agreed with your humble opinion, but the ex-Lakers player-turned-actor took his departure with aplomb. He said he was thinking about getting his U.S. citizenship (he's Canadian) and mentioned perhaps tying the knot with girlfriend Eliza Dushku. On the acting front, he's been attached to a Daniel J. Gillin movie called "Paradi$e," about a Hollywood family, along with names including Chad Michael Murray, Eric Balfour and Lauren Conrad — but there's no telling when that might actually get done. DEAR STACY: Watching the "Back to the Future" trilogy on cable recently, we were wondering whatever became of the actor who played Biff Tannen and his various relatives.
DEAR NANCY: Thomas F. Wilson continues to act. In recent years, he's been seen in episodes of "Psych," "House M.D." and "Boston Legal," as well as doing a lot of voice-over work ("Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions," "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie," etc.). He's also a stand-up comedian and an accomplished artist whose paintings of antique toys hang in such choice places as Disneyland. DEAR STACY: Whatever happened to Brett Butler, the very funny but very messed-up star of "Grace Under Fire"? — N.S., Santa Monica, Calif. DEAR N.S.: Butler performed her first comedy gig in three years earlier this month, at the Cox Capitol Theatre in Macon, Ga. Whether the comic, who was once considered the Southern female answer to Lenny Bruce, will continue performing or disappear from the spotlight again is impossible to predict, as she's shown up intermittently here and there (appearances on David Letterman's show, "My Name Is Earl," "The Larry Sanders Show") through the dozen years since her series and her career blew up, thanks to her admitted alcohol and drug addictions. Recent years have found her living on a farm northwest of Atlanta. Now, though, the twice married and divorced performer refers to herself as a failed farmer — perhaps the reason she returned to the stage.
