A Season of Funnymen Going Dark, Led by Ted Danson, Kelsey Grammer/French Stewart Surprised by Zoo Ownership

When comics and comedic actors take on serious roles, the results can be stunningly good — as exemplified by such unforgettable turns as Red Buttons' work in "Sayonara," Jamie Foxx's in "Ray" and Mo'Nique's in "Precious." This fall, the theme of funny people showing serious acting chops on TV will loom large — if for no other reason than "Cheers" and "Frasier" stars Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer getting oh-so-dramatic.

Danson's new "CSI" character seems a kind and compassionate sort — very likeable - to judge by early descriptions by the show-runners and a sample clip. He's a well-adjusted family man, they say. Well, we'll see about that. Surely some secrets, breakdowns or life catastrophes must be in store. Danson's recent turn on "Damages" proved that when he's funny, he's fabulous. But when he's not funny, he might be even better.

Then there's Kelsey Grammer's upcoming Starz drama, "Boss," in which he plays a character described as a ruthless (fictional) Chicago mayor.

"Ruthless" is too pale a word for the frighteningly volatile, sometimes violent, corrupt and brilliant tyrant he portrays. Grammer has said he wanted to get back to his classical theater roots. Indeed. His "Boss" is so large and so fraught with tragedy of his own making, he could have been invented by Shakespeare. The character's degenerative brain disease forces him to see what his lust for power has done to his life and relationships — even as he goes to extremes to keep it secret.

Grammer is breathtaking.

Frasier Crane is nowhere to be seen.

DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ: French Stewart shrugs off reports that he's in the much-anticipated new Muppets movie. Never happened.

"Someone put that on IMDB," he tells us. "You know what? My Wikipedia page once said that I own two zoos in Albuquerque, which I don't. And by the way, Albuquerque is clearly a one-zoo town."

Fans of the one-time "3rd Rock From the Sun" actor can hear him this fall in Fox's new animated series, "Allen Gregory."

THE VIDEOLAND VIEW: Hallmark Channel is bringing "A Smile as Big as the Moon" to the small screen. Based on the popular book by Mike Kersjes with Jo Layden, it's about Kerses' unique voyage into the unknown. A high school football coach and special-education teacher, he decided that if his special-ed students wanted to go to space camp — which they did — then they should be able to do so. And he found a way to get a bunch of kids with conditions ranging from Down syndrome to Tourette's into a demanding camp program filled with gifted science students, with amazing results. Casting is going on now.

THE BIG SCREEN SCENE: Casting is also near completion for a low-budget feature described as "a ridiculous comedy-slasher-horror movie set in a retirement home." It's called "Hotel Arthritis." All in the cast are in their sixties, seventies or eighties. At least it's giving some senior actors work.
