About Jennifer Merin
Jennifer Merin, author of the weekly syndicated column Around the World With Jennifer Merin, hails from a background as diverse as any of her travel itineraries.
She's the former travel columnist for The Associated Press and several newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune and Newsday. She has contributed freelance articles on travel and other subjects to such magazines as Discovery, Modern Bride and Ms., and is the author of four travel books: Bantam's Mexico, Serious Shopper's Guide to Paris, Serious Shopper's Guide to Los Angeles and International Directory of Festivals of Theater, Dance and Folklore. She's written the celebrity travel column for Endless Vacation Magazine.
Merin's theatrical background adds a unique sense of flair and drama to both her travels and her writing. Here's a brief tour of some of the experiences she's embarked upon:
-- By land: snowmobiled across Europe's largest glacier; harvested wild rice with the Ojibwe in Minnesota; herded reindeer with the Sami in northern Norway and Sweden; climbed Dune No. 9 in Namibia; rode across Yellowstone National Park on horseback; and assisted at dinosaur digs in Alberta, Canada.
-- By sea: Sailed aboard tall ships along the west and east coasts of the United States, and aboard a Viking longboat across the North Atlantic and in regattas in St. Maarten, Norway, St. Thomas and elsewhere. Cruised Antarctica three times; attempted transit of the Northwest Passage but was blocked by ice conditions; jigged for piranha on the Amazon; and ice-fished in Minnesota.
A true citizen of the world, Merin is based -- but not often found -- in New York City.
