You may have heard that QANTAS is short for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service. Brazilian airline Varig has a name that is short for Viacao Aerea Rio Grandense, and Belgium's Sabena is short for Societe Anonyme Belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation Aerienne. The Polish airline LOT is short for "lotnicze," which means "flight" in Polish.
