If Rick Perry wants to be president of the United States, he should start acting more like a president and less like a second-string radio talk-show host. Ron Paul, who almost no one (including himself) would call a moderate and has advocated a return to the gold standard, was among the first to recognize that the Texas governor had simply gone too far in equating the Fed's monetary policy with treason.
Throwing red meat to a campaign audience in Iowa, Perry said: "If this guy prints more money between now and the election, I dunno what y'all would do to him in Iowa, but we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas. Printing more money to play politics at this particular time in American history is almost treacherous or treasonous in my opinion."
"This guy" is Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. You might agree with his policy of keeping interest rates at record lows in the hopes of stimulating the economy. Or you might disagree, or worry about inflationary pressure, or be concerned that such low interest rates interfere with the operation of the markets. Reasonable people can disagree about these things.
Paul, who has called for the abolition of the Fed and who has been pressing the issue far longer than Perry, said only half in jest, "He makes me look like a moderate. I have never once said Bernanke has committed treason."
Let the record be clear: Bernanke was appointed to his position by former President (and Texas Gov.) George W. Bush.
Questioning the patriotism of someone you disagree with on policy grounds may be good politics for Perry in the short run; the crowd cheered, and the press is writing. But whatever the short-term gain, it reflects a lack of respect and dignity that should be a disqualification for the highest office in the land.
Our Founding Fathers, for obvious reasons, took the idea of treason very seriously.
Unlike other crimes, it is specifically defined, and limited, in the Constitution:
"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court."
Treason is not a term to be tossed around lightly.
Whether he is right or wrong, Bernanke loves his country as much as Perry does and has devoted himself to doing his best to honor and protect it.
Only weeks after Gabby Giffords returned to the House floor for the first time, Perry has no business making jokes about treating public officials "pretty ugly down in Texas," much less suggesting that they could be guilty of betraying our country. This is irresponsible talk, no better than hate speech, and while Perry has a right to say it, the rest of us — Republican and Democrat, moderate and conservative — have an obligation to condemn him for it. America has real enemies; the Fed chairman is not one of them.
I've never written these words before and may never again, but Ron Paul is right. It's not a question of who is "moderate." It is a question of who has any integrity or judgment. Based on his comments in Iowa, Perry may be a crowd pleaser, but he is not ready for prime time, let alone the presidency. Shame on him. If he is the best the Republicans have to offer — the new frontrunner as some are saying — then his party is cruising for a bruising. Perry may not have better judgment, but most Americans do.

How seriously do you take it when "journalists" refer to citizens as "terrorists" or "insurgents", or "crazies"? Perry is your type of guy, as Governor he knew exactly what every twelve year old girl needed shoved into her veins. C'mon, you love that type of arrogance, even if it turns out that there was a vested monetary interest in shoving that needlle into little girls. The Obama way! Barri or Perry? After three years hasn't your guy shown that " he is not ready for prime time, let alone the presidency."? Nice economy we have right now, and it is all Obama's. Perry is the worst the reps have to offer, and he is still as good as your man. I hope you show such great respect for the judgment of most Americans come December of 2012. Promise?

I keep coming back to your columns because, despite our differences in political outlook, you speak quietly and politely, and with reason as well as passion. I agree with your remarks about Perry. I want the Republicans to field a worthy candidate, and the only one who presents with integrity is Ron Paul, whom you mention. Unfortunately, pure Libertarianism will not fly too far in the USA, at least not right now. So, we are bereft of any candidate in either party who demonstrates true leadership qualities. It is very discouraging.

Wow ... interesting partial blindness. The media has piled all over Perry for one comment. You even use that most ridiculous of tactics - quoting the "founding fathers". Tell you what - let's do quote them. A good number of them were vigorously opposed to the idea of a central bank. (Indeed, when England tried to place the colonies under the control of the Bank of England, it was one of the final insults that lead to the revolutionary war). Thomas Jefferson, in fact, saw a central bank as "an engine for speculation, financial manipulation, and corruption" (odd how smart those "founders" you quote really were).
As far as intemperate comments go .... funny you should mention Giffords - remember all the comments from the left immediately after it happened? It had to have been inspired by talk radio? The right? Then it turned out the guy was just a crazy man that was apolitical, and gave no evidence at all of having listened to talk radio.
And what about the current budget debate? Republicans that refused to roll over to democratic requests (i.e., something "reasonable people can disagree about") were likened to "terrorists". I don't read you every week, but I do not recall the article in which you said "shame on you" to those folks. (And believe me, as we approach the anniversary of 9/11, the word "terrorist" has a much larger emotional resonance than "treason" does).
"If he is the best the Republicans have to offer — the new frontrunner as some are saying — then his party is cruising for a bruising. Perry may not have better judgment, but most Americans do."
Really? Please do keep believing that. "Most Americans" see both parties as engaging in equally inflamed rhetoric (even though the media only seems to take offense when one party engages in it) ... and as far as cruisin for a bruisin - take a look at the polls sister. It turns out that "most Americans" don't give a flying crap about the rhetoric of either side - they DO have good judgement, and they are not looking at words, they are looking at reality ... the reality of high joblessness, an uncertainty about new regulations and laws that are suffocating new business growth, an exploding national debt, and a nation that is going in a horridly wrong direction. And "blaming Bush" isn't working anymore.
I can see why you and your ilk are frightened by Perry ... but you'll need to learn to make your hatchet jobs just a little less obvious ...

Such is the fundamental basis of all Democrat and Obama actions. LOL. Remember Joe the plummer et al.?
I just stopped reading after that paragraph so I can not comment on the rest of the article.

I agree with you, Ms Estrich. I would also agree with you if you applied the same criteria and passion to some of the statements made by the current President.

Rather than mischaracterize Perry's remarks, Susan might instead want to focus on the words he used and which she quotes to wit “Printing more money to play politics at this particular time in American history is almost treacherous or treasonous in my opinion." The distinguishing and operative phrase in the quoted sentence which Susan conveniently ignores is “to play politics” and further she conveniently ignores the qualifier “almost”. I would not be so quick to so qualify.
As Susan correctly posits "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort”
There is such a thing as economic war. Economic war, perhaps just as effective if not more effective than military war and aims at destroying the wealth of a nation, of destroying its means of production and of bankrupting it. We have a President that is not only conducting economic war on the US but has demonstrably adhered to our enemies and has given them aid and comfort.
What Bernake [and Geithner together] are now doing is actually playing politics not to save the country or its economy but to give aid to the enemy of the Republic, of the Constitution and of the United States within the Whitehouse and are doing that notwithstanding the origin of the appointment of either of them.
For background, it was the actions and or inactions of Geithner (then regulator and Pres Fed Reserve Bank NY) Greenspan (Chairman Fed Bd. 87-06) along with Clinton, Franks, Dodds, JA Johnson (CEO Fannie Mae 91-98) Franklin Reines (CEO Fannie Mae 99-05) that together with the actions of others were the primary cause of the financial meltdown of the economy in the first place. The actions or inactions of these clowns was indeed undeclared war but war nevertheless on the economy of the United States undertaken for their personal gain and indeed their actions did give aid to our enemies.
The same clowns including Bernake that previously embarked upon war on the economy through, inter alia, the agency of the Fed and its destructive interventionist, money printing policies are the same clowns that continue that war by continuing the economy destroying policies of spending money we do not have, of the unending printing of money (quantitative easing Jeez!), of adhering to our enemies for example China by selling our debt to it, by borrowing from it and simultaneously lending money to it we that we do not have.
No, playing politics to aid those that are hell bent upon the destruction of the economy of the United States, per the definition of treason set forth in the Constitution is very arguably treasonous.

Totally agree with this column and thank you, Susan, for telling it like it is. Another writer that we fiercely miss is the late Molly Ivins. She is probably twirling in her grave! In her Texas way she could put The Hair in his place and did many times in the past. Keep up the pressure on this loser.

The level of hypocrisy displayed by Dem supporters never ceases to amaze me. The current president, whom you support and helped elect, is absolutely the least 'presidential' president this country has every had. Yet you bash Perry for his comments. He, like every other citizen, is entitled to freedom of speech. And there are many Americans who agree with him. At least he didn't make a movie about the assassination of a sitting president.

Re: Royal
Taking treason seriously. What is Estrich's complaint? There has never been a traitor that liberals did not like or rally around or a treasonous actity in which they would not engage.
Estrich herself expressed her longstanding admiration for traitor Hanoi Jane Fonda and relatively recently argued in court that fundraising for jihad against America was protected by the First Amendment. Treasonous? Yes.
Democrats at the highest level and their administrations have harbored, assisted and shielded more than their fair share of known traitors.
In 1943 Colonel Carter Clark began the highly successful Venona project to break the Soviet codes. Neither FDR nor Truman was told about Venona. You may wonder why? Answer. Democrats could not be trusted. FDR's Admin was rife with soviet agents.
The Venona papers once declassified identified Democrats, Alger Hiss (Sec State FDR), Dexter White (Asst sec Treasury FDR) Lauchlin Currie (Admin Asst FDR), Duncan Lee (chief of staff to head of OSS, FDR) Harry Hopkins (special advisor FDR) all as soviet agents and traitors. Venona raised serious questions about other prominent Democrats namely Henry Wallace (VP FDR), Owen Lattimore (FDR) Harold Ickes(interior secretary FDR, and father of Clinton dep chief of staff). At the start of his Presidency Eisenhower actually instructed his attorney general to publically announce on TV that Truman had appointed a known soviet spy (Dexter White) as top US official at the IMF. Assistance and adherence to our enemies by Democrats? Absolutely.
Until appearance of the Obamas, Jimmy Carter was America's hater and disparager in chief. The Nobel peace prize award gladly, accepted by Carter was expressly made to him as a criticism of America. For any American, much less a former, if useless President, to accept such an award on the basis upon which it as given was at least adhering to our enemies and giving them aid and comfort. Also do not forget Carter's assistance to N. Koran becoming nuclear.
In exchange for campaign funds, Clinton in 1993 decided to terminate the COCOM security controls that denied sensitive technologies to nuclear proliferators and adversary powers and gave the Chinese the secrets to our intercontinental ballistic weapons systems allowing targeting of cities in the US. Adherence and assistance to enemies? Absolutely.
Operation Fast and Furious, knowledge of which is absurdly denied by Holder and Obama, intentionally and illegally armed enemies of America directly across our southern border, with an ulterior motive of attacking the Second Amendment. Two federal agents were killed by such enemies. War on America and or adherence to our enemies? Absolutely.
Liberals take treason very seriously, it is their raison d'etre.

Liberals, including the (remake the government) Marxists, should be treated as traitors (treasonus), but are not for PC reasons. Our country is in deep doodoo.

In a latest poll, there are 27 categories of voters that are showing declining interest in the current president and his policies. Policies that are an abject failure, except for the one issue where he told us that his policies would cause the price of energy to skyrocket.
Hispanics down
conservatice democrats down
age 65+ down
liberal democrats down
age 30-39 down.
independents down.
And Obozo, our clown in chief, keeps the jokes coming. 2 jets to go on vacation because his wife can't wait a couple of hours. 2 motorcades because they couldn't come in one plane,
And the best is the contrast of Obozo, with 2 corp. jets to take him on vacation while thousands of black Americans sweltered in the heat in line looking for help to get a job.
But a $50,000/week home for vacation, 2 jets and the Blacks in line, hearing that he is going to spend all his time working on unemployment, then heading for the golf course.
Just amazing.
In a sign down south the wording was that if you voted for Obama to show that you weren't racist in 2008 could you vote for someone else in 2012 to show that you aren't stupid.
