Say It Ain't So, Alec

Comment

Alec Baldwin has a girlfriend.

Hardly a headline, except for the fact that yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas is 26 years younger.

Baldwin is a heartthrob for the 50-something and 40-something generation of women. To be sure, there was that awful voicemail message to his daughter. But equally awful was the disclosure of the message by his former wife. Bad divorce. Not completely his fault.

And if you can put that aside, there are few actors his age who are as smart and as sexy and as charismatic as Alec Baldwin. And even fewer who are single.

So what's he doing with a 27-year-old yoga instructor? Nothing against yoga instructors; I adore mine. She's 40 and is a talented actress and writer. Her boyfriend, a director, is 48. Great.

It's the age thing. I try to imagine what people would say if I turned up with a guy who was 26 years younger than me. None of it is polite. None of it would be flattering to me. Gigolo is the word that jumps to mind.

Cougars? Come on. Katie Couric has been dating a younger man — but not 26 years younger. Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore aren't 26 years apart.

"He's a young 80," one of my friends said to me, describing an "eligible" man. I passed. But the truth is, I'd have much more to say to a young 80 than to an old 27. And no one would think it strange. Eighty-year-old men date (and marry) women who are significantly younger than me, and people just say congratulations.

I had dinner not long ago with a friend who is eager (OK, maybe desperate) to find a (rich) guy. She got more and more depressed as each age-appropriate man walked in with someone who was literally half his age.

"Nurse and purse," I said to her, trying to cheer her up. She didn't laugh. And she's a beauty, by the way, who had — until now — gone from one desirable guy to the next.

And then she turned 50. And even though she is still tall and blonde and beautiful, she's now competing with 30-year-olds in a city (Los Angeles) and culture (Hollywood) that prizes youth more than intelligence and beauty more than wit.

The only thing worse than guys dating women half their age is women resorting to extreme measures — and I mean extreme — to try to look half of theirs. I'm not talking Botox. I'm not talking about getting rid of the bags. I'm talking multiple surgeries — lift the face, flatten the stomach, redo the breasts, even redo more personal parts. I kid you not, there is a doctor here in Los Angeles whose only specialty is rejuvenating vaginas. Yikes.

Viagra gave older men the chance for sexual satisfaction that, in many cases, age had taken away. Hallelujah. You're never too old to have sex. But with whom?

So there go Alec and Hilaria. All the best. Everybody gets to pick for themselves. The fact that she was in high school when the planes struck on 9/11 is clearly no impediment, at least not yet. If he weren't rich and famous, it's hard to believe they'd be together. If she weren't beautiful and young, it's even harder.

Maybe the reason women get more interesting as they get older is because they don't spend as much time with men half their age. And I think most of the ones I know wouldn't even want to. What would we talk about, we say to each other — as if talk is the most important thing. If you ask me, it is. But clearly it's not for everybody.

Big mistake for Alex and his viagra; but then he's not a very bright person to begin with.

This column takes a sort of Maureen Dowd approach, movies and movie stars get mentioned as if the little girls still believe Rhett Butler will ride up and take them to Camelot. The mixed metaphors are appropriate to the fantasy. Listen again to that Baldwin rant, he calls his 12 year old daughter a "disgusting little pig". Wouldn't give a half-penny for his thoughts or love. There are incidences in life that should not be passed over or dismissed as Estrich suggests. He is not smart, he is a self-indulgent overpaid pile of it. Hope he moves to France after the next election.

The problem is that women do not get more interesting as they get older. Neither do men. It is nature. Marriage becomes a project two people are working on constantly and simultaneously. Different paradigms, but a shared experience. There is less talk than Estrich wants, quick eye contact and mutual acknowledgment become more than enough. The project becomes interest absorbing, how it reacts to this or that. The project shifts, and changes, and adapts to new situations; no one says, "We are growing old" because both sides see it in themselves. In this way the role of dignity and politeness are enhanced. I don't know, but it just isn't like a move, and I never rode up on a horse...wait, I used to drive Mustang 5.0's when this project had its roots. Never mind, Susan look for a guy in a green Mustang, he's your Alec Baldwin.

Estrich say "Gigolo is the word that jumps to mind" It is one word that certainly springs to mind when the name John Kerry crops up. A target rich environment, for Kerry of three purple hearts infamy, is a room full of wealthy widows. Teresa Heinz Kerry? Enough said.

So there he goes again, as predictable as day following night. Mr Wrong reads a totally apolitical Estrich column about the age difference in relationships, and what is his thoughtful response? " Hmmm. This reminds me of John Kerry and how he didn't really earn those medals. And oh yeah, how he married a really rich woman." A question to other conservatives who tread here: Doesn't this guy embarrass you? Or do you think he his representative of what a true conservative is?

@Cadbury - Joe isn't a conservative. . . he is angry and bitter.

There is a difference, despite what Joe would have you believe.

One of the big myths of our society is that women get more interesting as they get older. That is not always true.

I'm 42 and he's not a heartthrob to me. I just checked his age - he's younger than I thought he was, but I always thought of him as the older, fat braying jackass guy. He's got great eyes, but that's an Irish trait. I'm Irish, I have my own great eyes - it's not worth the violent temper he obviously has.

When I was in my 20s and living in LA, i would regularly FREAK OUT at the old guys that thought it was their right to hit on me or my friends. It was horrifying.

Get the fuck out of Los Angeles, what are you doing there? It really is different elsewhere. Yeah, there are still some age differences. etc. but nothing like the psychosis of living there. Take care of yourself first. Weren't you going on a few columns ago about violence against women and it's all about wise choices? Well this is one of those obviously wise choices.

Right now, my mother has been with someone 13 years younger for 15 years; my neighbor is 10 years older than her husband. My friend just married someone 8 years younger and another friend has two kids with someone 11 years younger than she is. They've been married 10 years.

None of these women are remotely cougarish BTW. One is Asian and so looks naturally young compared to white people, but the others not so much. These people are all upper middle class professionals and live in nice South Bay, CA and SF/SV neighborhoods- but they are not Los Angeles superrich.

Still, if you just looked at my life alone, you'd think it was normal for women to be a bit older than their husbands. I consider this a direct effect of having been so completely grossed out by my years in LA proper.

Are things SO bad in Obamaville that we've gone back to Junior High School antics? With all the really serious problems this country has -- due to liberal ideas run amok, the big deal of the day is who Alec Baldwin is dating? Will you PLEASE grow up!!!

It is your blog, so I suppose you may write on whatever subject you choose; however, this is the first time I have been disappointed. This is better suited for the supermarket check-out line. Please go back to the serious subjects for which you are known.

Re: Motley Wisdom
Estrich cannot write about serious subjects. What is she to write seriously about? Obama's solution to debt? No cannot go there. Obama has no plan save to create more debt. What about job creation? No. cannot go there. little president zero (oops ! got to be civil) Obama has no plan. Healthcare? No. A sizable majority is in favor of repeal of the unconstitutional Obamacare. Civility in debate? No cannot go there after Labor day and after today when this administration, its members or its enablers lack the courage to denounce Hoffa. Little president zero (oops again!)will not do so, Wasserman Schulz will not do so and hard working decent Americans were described as barbarians by bozo (ooops! one more time) Biden the vp on Monday and previously as terrorists during the debt ceiling debate. What about president zero's ( seems that wholly apt name has stuck) forthcoming Thursday night debacle ( no jobs speech no empty campaigning)? No again, the Whitehouse is playing that one all the way down, so don't go there girlfriend. Just what is a liberal girl hack to write about to bouy this Admin up and not appear entirely delusional. Answer, nothing. Say it ain't so Alec.

Gotcha!
Haven't you read about the ex-governor of Louisiana who is 85, bride 31. (not sure the ages, but over a 50 year age difference.
What do you have to say to that!
One colorful Southern woman here said that it would be "like trying to put an oyster in a slot machine."
Yikes!

Susan's friend fishing for a rich guy is just as shallow as an "old" guy searching for a young hottie. In both cases the female is looking for financial security and is not so focused on love and commitment. Guys beware.

This post goes a long way towards explaining, better than I ever could, the absolute bankruptcy of the secular concept of dating and mating--and, for that matter, about sex. Sad, inescapably sad, but not for the reasons you list. Sad because you've missed the point of marriage and sex altogether.

I am beginning to really like your logical mind: Outrageous phone message to daughter is partially ("not completely his fault") excused by outrageous message from ex-wife.
