Real Genius

A year ago, David Axelrod, the president's senior adviser, was a genius. A year ago, Rahm Emanuel, the president's chief of staff, was a wizard.

Axelrod was at President Obama's side for the long campaign, managing the strategy that resulted in Obama's victories over Hillary Clinton and John Edwards in the primaries, and John McCain in the general election. Anyone who thinks doing that is easy ought to try it: I have, and it isn't.

Emanuel, a veteran White House aide and congressman, managed to push through a stimulus bill in the president's first weeks in office and was credited with the skills and know-how to guide a first-term senator through the Washington snake pit.

Now, both of these men are the focus of scathing articles in major publications, the subject of backbiting and sniping, second-guessed for their strategy and toughness. What happened? How did two geniuses suddenly become such out-and-out fools?

This is the short answer: They didn't. They are still the guys they were last year. If they weren't in these jobs, people would be saying they should be and blaming the guys (or gals) who were. Welcome to the cruel world of politics.

Working in the highest levels of politics is a little bit like having an affair with a married person. It's bound to end badly, not because (as is the case with the affair) it's a bad move in the first place, but because democracy is so darn difficult.

No matter what you do, you're bound to fail sooner or later. And when you do, it's merciless.

In Hollywood, failure is also inevitable. Even Steven Spielberg makes a dog now and then, and he's among the best in the game. But failure in Tinseltown is not nearly as cruel; the joke is that you fail and get promoted. You show me an Academy Award winner, and I'll show you someone who's made almost as many dogs as hits. This year's obvious example is Sandra Bullock, who won an Oscar for best actress and a Razzie for worst.

It did not diminish her smile on election night, nor will it cut into her paycheck for her next film.

Not so in Washington. The town itself — and by that I mean not just the place and the people who work there, but the thousands more who spend their days opining or reporting on what they did wrong — has only grown more vicious over the years. In Washington, the national pastime is not baseball but gotcha. And the more you try to do, the more likely you are to be gotten.

Axelrod is being criticized for allowing the president to try to do too much. But if he hadn't, if Obama had decided earlier this year to put off his health care initiative until better economic times, I can promise you he would be criticized for allowing the president to do too little, for wasting the mandate and neglecting the commitments made during the campaign.

Emanuel is being criticized for being too tough, playing the inside game with too much vigor and too sharp elbows. But I'm old enough to remember when Jimmy Carter came to town with the Georgians, who were roundly criticized for not knowing or playing the Washington game with the toughness required. President Clinton was criticized for trying to shove a health care bill that Congress had no role in formulating down their throats. Emanuel is being criticized for doing just the opposite. Heads you lose, tails you lose.

Indeed, I can't tell you how many Democrats have come up to me in recent weeks to tell me I was "right" — that Hillary Clinton would have been the better president. Now, no one is a bigger fan of Hillary than I am, but I can promise you that if she were president, there would be plenty of Democrats longing for Barack.

Everyone makes mistakes, including presidents and their top advisers. But Axelrod and Emanuel were among the best in the business last year, and they still are. Their recent stumbles, if that's the right word, are not a sign that they have lost their touch, but only of just how hard their jobs are.

Agreed. But more important than how the Washington opinionators view their abilities, is their ability to get the President's message to Main Street Americans. Democrats need to put more spokespersons on the airwaves and grab some headlines by saying outrageous things that stick in the minds of the masses. Alan Grayson's "Republicans want you to die quickly" is the only thing any Democrat has said that can match a Sarah Palinism. Surely, there are a few more Alan Graysons in the Party of The People. Straight-talking, folksy folks with a flair for the common man's vernacular, some folks to counteract Obama's cool, reasonable, professorial and intelligent persona. Someone to win the "hearts and minds" of Middle Americans in this war of headlines and soundbites.

So how do you explain Reagan's success?
Also, Axelrod had the MSM in bed with him and Obama. Never did they (MSM) question Obama's way far left politics, his dislike for the military and his associations with extremist characters.

An important factor that is different this cycle is the involvement of the American public. For the first time, large numbers of ordinary, non-political citizens are actively engaged with the public policy process. These were people who were getting quietly exercised as Bush compromised his convictions and ran up deficit spending, particularly in expanding domestic government activity while conducting crucial military offensives in Iraq and Afghanistan. But they stayed quiet because they supported Bush on the war while the media and the Left was so vicious in their criticism. But then Obama got elected without any vetting by the media. There was no skepticism of Obama's lack of experience, questionable relationships with far left-wing players like Ayres and Rev. Wright, and hints (but few facts) about how expensive and statist his positions were. Obama and his staff aren't stupid. They knew they pulled off a huge dupe of the electorate and only had a short period of time til the world woke up and saw his agenda. They couldn't have believed they had a mandate to fundamentally change the United States as we know it. Thank God they're incompetent and millions normal people spoke up loud enough for the media to recognize and publicize their outrage at the direction Obama/Reid/Pelosi are trying to push us.

No doubt it must be difficult for Barack's advisers; especially now that, after being in office a year, the level of Barry's hypocrisy is clear to everyone (e.g. televised health care debates, backroom deals, supposedly being bi-partisan....). I might consider Axelrod and Emanuel genius' for getting Barack elected but the main stream media was so much in the bag for Barack that no one can honestly give the two full credit. Maybe 50% credit with the other 50% credit going to a fawning press corp.

I do agree however they probably have the toughest jobs of any presidential advisers in the history of our country because to continually try and get the public behind a person who is so condescending and disconnected from the American public is no doubt nearly impossible.

Well Susan it would appear that they did not invite people over for sushi. But, of course if they had it would have been shoved down their throats by the Chicago Mafia. The Daly machine got John F. Kennedy elected also with over 4,000 voters raising from the grave to vote, but, when he crossed them he paid dearly. Maybe the average citizen has figured out that it is impossbile to get out of debt by creating trillions in new debt. Who exactly does the healthcare bill benefit - certainly not the citizens and it is against the constitution to say that the government can force a person to purchase insurance or go to jail. Seems we had a case of this back in the 1700's about paying tax on tea. Bigger government and government spending caused the Great Depression to last a long time and it was only broken up because of WWII. If the president wants this so much, maybe he should do other Americans a favor and move to Europe where the socialist style governments are trying to figure out how to pay for the services promised to the people.

All you ever hear from Obama's political opponents is the company line, the morning's talking points. That he is a leftist, said without any hint the writer has any idea what it means. They talk about balanced budgets when the only President to achieve that has been their arch enemy Bill Clinton. They never speak of war and peace, just assume war is the best first choice. They wave the flag at the drop of a hat and have never served a moment in uniform or made a single sacrifice to defend our country. They hate unions, especially teachers unions without ever giving well thought out reasons other than they tend to vote Democrat. We are in a perpetual campaign mode now. The swearing in ceremony is fodder for partisan criticism as is the workout routine of the first lady. Some of the more ignorant even criticize the kids. Some don't want the Obama family to have any more children. Pure racism.

Susan...
David Axelrod wasn't much of a genius. President Obama beat Senator McCain 53% to 46%, hardly a mandate. That Obama won by only 7% is not impressive given that he ran against a senator who backed TARP (not popular) and who was viewed by the public as an extension of an increasingly unpopular president who got us involved in an increasingly unpopular war in Iraq.
If these guys are such wizards and geniuses, why is Obama considered by many as the second coming of Jimmy Carter?
The truth is that President Obama is a lightweight with a thin resume whose vaunted oratorical skills are gotten from a teleprompter. He doesn't think very well on his feet and we don't need any more proof on that than the press conference where he went on to opine on a local law enforcement matter when he admitted he didn't have all the facts.
Or you could argue that he is ill served by Messrs. Axelrod and Rahm. If that's the case, then he needs to clean house and get new people.
The easy answer maybe be hubris.

I heard Susan Estrich on Fox today and it still baffles me that the people in DC do not understand that government medicine is not a fight between two parties. The American people do not want the bills we have seen starting with 3200 and we have been ignored. That is what is going to hurt anyone who votes for obamacare. And I have been asking people to put it on the ballot for the American people to vote on in 2010 since our representatives are not listening to us. Susan, I know you are not part of the work that has been going on to stop this bill. But let me introduce myself to you. My name is Mindy Rodriguez and I live in Chattanooga TN. I am a senior and have read these bills (except for the one obama, pelosi and reid are trying to sell because it is not finished and is not on the internet for the American people to review before a vote is taken) For the first time in my life I marched in DC to try to get this bill killed and have everyone in the government to start over. I have very little money but I no longer obama and am going to take it out of the banks to protect it....this is a disgrace that Americans are afraid their president will steal their monies not only with tax increasing bill but stealing them direrct. Susan...our taxes will increase and so will our deficit....don't be a party member for a moment and think about it.

millions of us have asked dc to listen to us and they have ignored us and I do not think you have a peek at to how peevd the American people are....when a president and representatives does not listen to them they know they are fighting for our freedom....

Susan, I'm of the opposite political opinion, but I've been very impressed with your recent televised interviews. You seem to realize that our COMMY PRESIDENT is extremely dangerous.

We just don't have a "COMMY PRESIDENT" we have a Democrat Party that is full of Socialists, Facists and Communists. And many of them are in Washington, most in the White House.
True Democrats (Kennedy Democrats) don't speak out. Why? They no longer exist!
