I'm Worried for Our Country

Comment

The store window said 70 percent off. My son was getting a haircut across the street. I always enjoy chatting with the young woman from Boston who works there. Why not?

The woman from Boston was gone. Her replacement, older, a touch of an accent, was just as friendly. She had no clue who I was. Out of the blue, as I was modeling the now-affordable belt, she said to me: "I'm worried for our country."

She came to this country 20 years ago. Her husband is an architect who works for a firm with almost no work to do. She used to work down the block — a job she had for 23 years — until the owner told her, last December 26, that she was closing the store.

She was not complaining. "It isn't about me," she assured me. She is lucky — at least she is working. Her husband is educated. Eventually, he will find something because he is willing to do anything.

It is the country she is worried about. What is happening to America?

She is not alone.

In Washington, it seems, everything is a Democrat v. Republican issue. Winners and losers, the next election, the blame game.

Not here.

One of my friends, a longtime journalist, lost her job last week while she was in the Arctic reporting. The last line of her message would be funny if it weren't so real: Anyone looking for a trilingual reporter with almost 40 years of experience covering everything from international politics to global warming?

I doubt it. No offense, but most of the reporters I deal with these days are about 40 years younger, and I can only guess how much lower paid.

And that's just true across the board: younger people replacing older ones. As a teacher, I want young people to get every opportunity, but not at the expense of their parents, with families to support.

No matter where you look, fewer people are doing the work because fewer are out there buying, ordering, building. More people are spending their days worrying — not about who will get blamed or who will get elected, but how they are going to make ends meet.

Do they get this in Washington? Do they feel our pain?

I know they all claim they do. But that is certainly not how it seems. It doesn't feel like we are being asked to pull together; if feels like we are being torn apart. It doesn't feel like the various "leaders" are working together, but like they are scoring points at one another's expense.

We're still a AAA country, the president says. I don't know what that means. Of course we are still the luckiest people on the face of the globe. There are still plenty of people doing very well, but there are even more who aren't, and in the end, it doesn't matter how well you are doing if those around you are hurting.

I don't know what to do any more than the woman ringing up my belt does. I try to be generous. I encourage people not to give up. I search my Rolodex for contacts, rack my brain for ideas for friends. I know many people are doing the same thing. But the whole idea of government is that there are some things individuals can't do, some things we can only do together, some problems that are too big to solve one grain of sand at a time. We are decent people, but we cannot do it alone. I am worried for my country.

Therein lies the problem with classical economics . . . in the long run it may work, but in the meantime it leaves a lot of dead and wounded lying around. Furthermore, the experts have no more idea than I about what will work. You have very good cause to be concerned about our country.

All Americans should be very worried about their country, their Republic and their freedoms.

For seventy years and more this great country has been slowly destroyed piece by piece by a liberal progressive agenda, by a crowd of liberal ideology driven self interested politicians and arrogant activist liberal judges legislating from the bench and more recently by the useful idiots and parasites of the viper generation who have been their enablers. The frog being slowly boiled in the liberal water has at last woken up and has recognized the danger that it is in.

That recent awakening was caused by several principle matters including but not limited to (1) the election of the Marxist redistributionist America hater enemy within Obama as president and (2) the fact that the socialist Democratic Party had control of Senate and Congress since 2007 and super majorities in both Congress and Senate for two years which enabled it to more or less do as it pleased and thereby put the real face of liberal fascism on display for all to see.

On October 31, 2008 Obama the present destroyer in chief said this “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.”

It is axiomatic that the fundamental transformation of anything cannot take place without first destroying the essential essence of that which is to be fundamentally transformed. Obama living out a script for the downfall of America has set about the destruction of the essence of America with a vengeance. (For background read Obama's autobiography “Dreams from My Father” and Roots of Obama's Rage by Dinesh D'Souza). Obama has set out to destroy the notion of American exceptionalism, to destroy the American economy, to destroy America's wealth and its small business wealth creators, to destroy America's credibility, to destroy America's defensive capability and to destroy the American dream.

I will repeat that those who voted for Obama got what they voted for and it cannot be denied that they are now getting what they asked for, to wit, unconscionable crippling debt, rampant corruption, radical socialism, record unemployment, coming rampant inflation, a coming depression, the abject appeasement of those who would kill them and their families and a president “fiddling while Rome burns”.

The worry about our country has at its roots the underlying recognition tacit or explicit that we have as a president a thing whose objective, for whatever mean spirited reason or false ideology is not to build this country and its future but to diminish it and to diminish the future of our children and our future generations.

When we the people allow evil to take over it is unreasonable to expect anything but a bad outcome.

The solution is simple. Do not vote for elitists liberals and give them power. The level of delusions of grandeur and self perceived intellectual superiority of elitists liberals is only surpassed by the level of their actual ignorance.
First step in saving this country, getting Barack Obama out of the White House. The second step, is to get as many Democrats out of power as possible. The third step is to destroy the unions particularly the teachers unions.

Only now are Democrats starting to care about the economy because it is their liberal friends that are losing jobs now. You see, to Democrats, a recession is when Republicans or people in Republican states are losing jobs. It becomes a depression when government workers, Democrats, union workers, and teachers start losing jobs.

I suspect the most gratifying realization I have come to understand is that evil almost always ends up devouring itself. For example, cancer can only survive in a body with healthy cells capable of supporting the cancer. When the cancer spreads too far, the body dies killing both the good cells and the cancer.

Liberal Democrats are a cancer on the American Society which does not have enough strength to support an unlimited number of such despicable people. What we are seeing today is the cancer growing to a point to where the honorable and decent members of our society can no longer support the cancer. If this trend continues, America will cease to exist, or at a minimum, be a mere shadow of its former greatness. It pains me to see this trend continue, but at least I have the satisfaction of knowing that when liberal Democrats kill this country, their futures will die as well along with their evil.

Perhaps those who pick up the pieces will more successful as at least they will start with a free society free of the evil that is liberalism and with the added benefit of knowing that even a great country like the United States can be destroyed by such a philosophy and perhaps avoid the same fate.

Republicans have almost stopped pretending they serve anybody except a few million very rich people, and a few dozen very large corporations. It this trend continues, America will cease to exist, or at a minimum, be a mere shadow of its former greatness. Instead of a vibrant middle class, we'll have a permanently rich heriditary transnational aristocracy and a permanently poor underclass.

Re: Steven Doyle

It seems that you just do not get it. The conscious creation of a permanently poor underclass that is utterly dependent upon welfare and state handouts and can thefore be expected to vote for those that will provide such handouts and who so provide to perpetuate the the existence of such a dependent underclass is precisely what liberal fascism and socialism is all about. For socialism and liberal fascism to endure its proponents must create and promote and benefit from class warfare. That is all that Obama and liberals in Congress have done. When was the last time a poor man on welfare provided you or anyone else with a job?

Liberals are not at all interested in raising people up and keeping them up but in dragging everyone down into the same hole. It is the elitist liberals, and the liberal crony capitalists supporting Obama that consider themselves to be more equal than others, and who consider themselves the hereditary aristocracy.

After 12 years in office, 3 years out of office for bush II and 19 years out of office for bush I, when I perform a simple google search on the phrase "president bush blames" (with the apostrophes), I receive over 529,000 hits

After 8 years in office, 11 years out of office, when I perform a simple google search on the phrase "president clinton blames" (with the apostrophes), I receive over 45,000 hits

After just three years in the White House, and no year is out of office, when I perform a simple google search on the phrase "president obama blames" (with the apostrophes), I receive over 768,000 hits.

Point is, apparently Obama is not responsible for anything.

Just a few minutes before I go off to Saratoga for the races this afternoon. A lot of our nation's rich congregate at the "SPA" during this time every year. It is nice to rub elbows with them because they seem to all have an optimism that is contagious. I do not share your view that we should be worried for our country. We stillhave a country FILLED with educated citizens. Those with eductions will pull us through any down times ahead. EDUCATION WAS AN INVESTMENT THIS COUNTRY HAS MADE OVER THE YEARS AND IT STANDS US IN GOOD STEAD.
We look at those faces of starving babies in Somalia and many reach out to help, now with their immediate need which is food and clothing, but the only thing that will ultimately save them is to educate their people. Now the War lords just intimidate and murder them. An educated people knows how to band together and fight back.
Here in America, we are nowhere near having more than a handful of people who are starving to death and those poor souls usually do not have enough education to know where to seek help. WE ACTUALLY WASTE MORE MONEY FINDING THESE PEOPLE THAN WE SPEND TO FEED THEM.
Today when I go to Saratoga, everyone there has the opportunity to bet two dollars in an attempt to win the Saratoga Pick SIX, an exotic bet where you pick six straight winners..there will be over a million in the pool. The millionaires will bet combinations that cost thousands of dollars to cover the top horses in each race. A poor stablehand can pick one horse in each race for two dollars and if he has some inside info(education) can have the opportunity to win a portion of this huge pot just like the millionaires. It just means he has to take a risk. Thank GOD for a country where everyone at least has the opportunity to share in the blessings of this country. It is a matter of making your own luck by hard work either mentally or with labor. Americans have always had the intelligence necessary to work their way out of any problem. One thing is certain is that all Americans , Republican, Democrat, Conservative or liberal will have a hand in digging us out of any problem. Gotta leave now for the races so I can't be around for the inevitable trashing of my post by the paid shills who monitor this post site and trash posts and try to intimidate and control the debate.

One have never guessed how easy it was to get rid of the mountain of debt, create jobs and turn dispair over the housing market into joy and reverse the appalling mess Obama has made of the country in just thirty months into hope and change. Bernake should just print a billion or so and play the Pick Six at Saratoga but firsly ask an educated stable boy how to place the money. Makes as much sense as what the FED is doing now. Just where is that parallel universe in which you live Robert. If the bulk of so called educated Americans had taken just five minutes to properly educate themselves about Obama, the real policies of Democrats and the real causes of the financial meltdown we would not have the same clowns that caused the debacle masquerading as those who could fix it and we would not have an administration pursuing the same policies that were at the root of the debacle in the first place.

Re: robert lipka

P.S. The headline in the Mail on Line today, a middle of the road English daily could not say it clearer , to wit, "Years of liberal dogma have spawned a generation of amoral, uneducated, welfare dependent brulalised youngsters" For at least a generation we have abondoned the education of our chilfdren and the teaching of our youth in college to liberal ideaologues, socialist trades unions and progressive activists, who have totally failed them. America , sadly is about to reap a bitter harvest. Witness the disgraceful teacher union orchastrated scenes in Wisconsin and the unnacceptable standards in all our public schools, so widespread that waivers are to be given on basic standards because of the high rate of failure.

Just back from the races.....The pick Six was won by a lot of people today who shared in a nice pool. the Payoff was 9,109.00 for having picked the six winners so a lot of the hoi polloi hit it along with the millionaires. zi could only manage 5 of 6 for a payoff of 110 dollars. That Hardlly pays for my dinner but I had enough winners to pay my expenses so can't complain.
Lots of people on their cellphones with their stock brokers, Susan, and they were BUYING not selling like the panicked crowd who can't afford to ride this out. They were mostly BUYING Bank of America which was one of the biggest losers both Monday and again today. The millionaires buy the bargains when the price goes down. It is a fascinating game, CAPITALISM. You just have to have the (stones) to participate.
Had a nice conversation with a lawyer from Philadelphia and he also was bullish on buying stocks right now before they stabilize and go back up. You buy your 70% off bargains when you can. Somewhere down the road this economy will turn around Have faith in America..!!! Every investment you make, helps those companies hire more employees .

I understand your point but the problem presently remains as to what jobs would the training be aimed? Since this Admin took over unemployment has rocketed to 9.2% as reported through the deceiving standards utilized by the powers that be, which of itself is indicative that the actual unemployment rate is about 18% maybe higher. Professional people and already highly skilled desperate for work tradesmen cannot find jobs because there is currently none to be found and it will continue that way for so long as the present jackass remains in office and his anti business policies continue to be implemented through his illicit regulatory czars.

re:Early Pure idiocy
Just saw Donald Trump on TV this morning and he stated very clearly that he was going to buy a huge stake in BANK of AMERICA......I guess EARLY believes that DONALD TRUMP is an idiot as well. I was only reporting what I was overhearing and the general mood of the people in the clubhouse. The RICH are BUYERS now that stocks are depressed. Just as SUSAN was able to get bargains at 70% off, the rich are taking advantage of the sellers who are panicked by the constant negative talk about the economy.
Years ago a very rich man in my town gave me a book titled THE RICH AND THE SUPER RICH by FERDINAND LUNDBERG. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS # 67-10015 COPYRIGHT 1968 HE ALSO GAVE ME A NEW BIBLE AND TOLD ME TO READ AND LIVE BY BOTH BOOKS....He could not have been more right. He also told me to live by the priciples of Matthew 25 and proverbs 17:17. If you also read both books, you will become wealthy both in spirit and in the lesser important wealth of earth. You can't take earthly goods to heaven. After he passed on I was informed that he had mentioned me in his will.....it was not money that he passed on to me but a very large collection of books. I was flabbergasted but over the years that library proved to be an education that I could not get in college. Most of the books were positive and uplifting books on economics and religious faith and the importance of being a decent and loving human being. He left me a brief letter instructing me to read the books and pass them along to friends and even enemies if I had any. Over the years, I did as he instructed. I kept the above mentioned books Fascinating reading,,,,both of them.
I makes me feel sad that so many are wrapped up in hate and negativity these days. A more positive approach to life would make the world a better place to live in. DALE CARNEGIE wrote a wonderful book called THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING . That is another book that was given to me and I gave that one to one of my sons. One of the main tenets of that book was that all things are cyclical and hard times always give way to good times and thenchange again and again. Those who keep focused on the good times will enjoy a happy life.
By the way stocks went up today based on imporving unemployment numbers.....things change from one day to the next, one month to the next and one year to the next. Put a smile on your face EARLY things are bound to get better for you. ENJOY THE DAY THAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU !!!

You might want to check out NEWSMAX.com today. They are running a short interview with Donald Trump about his stock buying and the stocks he likes. Interesting. Was at Saratoga again today and the world's money supply didn't exactly tilt in my direction today but I made enough to make it fun.
Heard some bad news today. One of the Texas billionaire crowd Charles Wyly was killed over the past weekend when he pulled his Porsche out in front of an SUV in Colorado. He gave to a lot of causes including the arts. (He was always vilified for giving to Conservative politicians but that is the cost of doing business) His brother Sam , also a billionaire set up a foundation to help give minority businesses a financial boost. He ,,,make that both of them,, had a lot of friends. One of them at Saratoga today let us know the awful news. One thing that money can't do is buy you an extra minute on this earth.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the article on Trump.

Finding some "reason" to lay off/fire older workers and replace them with younger, cheaper workers is a common practice. Recessions are good cover for that practice. "Reorganiation" and "streamlining" are excuses in good times. But every time it happens, the chldren of that "older" worker get the message: Don't work too hard, don't sacrifice too much of your health and family life to climb the ladder or even to keep your same old job, because when you finally start earning what you've worked for, you will be flagged for lay-off. Actually, that's a good lesson. There aren't many jobs or things that money can buy that are worth an ulcer, a heart attack, or missing out on your children's childhood and wrecking your marriage. Americans work too much and enjoy their short time on this planet too little. One day at a time and smell the roses.
