When your mom told you it would pay to become a doctor, you should have listened.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics just came out with its annual listing of jobs and compensation, which U.S. News & World Report then crunched to find the highest-paid jobs in the United States. Nine of the top 10 require medical training.

Coming in at No. 1 were anesthesiologists (average annual pay: $232,830), followed by surgeons ($230,540), obstetricians and gynecologists ($216,760), oral and maxillofacial surgeons ($216,440), internists ($191,520), orthodontists ($186,320), other physicians and surgeons ($184,820), family and general practitioners ($180,850) and psychiatrists ($177,520).

The only non-medical job on the list, ranked 10th, was chief executive at $176, 840.

According to U.S.

News, anesthesiologists make 12 times the annual pay of the nation's lowest-paid workers: salon shampooers.
