I was given wisdom largely because I went to a religious school — a yeshiva, a traditional Jewish school in which the long day (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) was divided between studying religious subjects (in Hebrew) and secular subjects (in English).

With the increasing secularization of society, less and less wisdom has been conveyed to young people. One particularly obvious example is most secular people, especially on the left, believe human beings are basically good. It is difficult to overstate the foolishness of this belief. And a belief it is: There is no evidence to support it, and there is overwhelming evidence — like virtually all of human history — to refute it. Jewish and Christian kids who study the Bible know how morally flawed human nature is by the age of 10.
Updated: Tue Dec 18, 2018
f53e8c6f5738217f1170dc81bb147320 Does 'Merry Christmas' Matter? for 12/11/2018 Tue, 11 Dec 2018 00:00:00 -0800

Is "Merry Christmas" a thing of the past, a greeting from a bygone era, a remnant of a past with which we no longer want to be associated? We might not be there yet, but if current trends continue, we're not far off. If so, it's a shame, a further coarsening of the culture — and worse. It is yet another an example of the removal of religion, specifically Christianity, from a country that has long been the most religious major industrialized democracy in the world.

Proponents of "happy holidays" argue that this is no big deal. They say the advocates of saying "merry Christmas" are making a mountain out of a molehill. There is no "war on Christmas," they say. But the "happy holidays" advocates want it both ways. They dismiss promoters of "merry Christmas" as hysterical while simultaneously replacing "merry Christmas" with "happy holidays"; "Christmas vacation" with "winter vacation"; and "Christmas party" with "holiday party."
Updated: Tue Dec 11, 2018
008719d1f4782b1073152f781ed5e64f A Message to Young Women from a Career Woman for 11/27/2018 Tue, 27 Nov 2018 00:00:00 -0800

Every Wednesday, the second hour of my national radio show is the "Male/Female Hour." Of course, the same can be said of the damage left-wing Catholics are doing to Catholicism and America, other left-wing Christians are doing to Christianity and America, and, most obviously, the damage the secular left-wing is doing. But since anti-Semitism is in the news, and given the prominence of many left-wing Jews, I will focus on them.

The damage done to Jews by left-wing Jews is not new. It began at the beginning of the left with Karl Marx, the grandson of two Orthodox rabbis (his parents had undergone pro forma conversion to Christianity). He wrote one of the most anti-Semitic tracts of the 19th century, "On the Jewish Question," published in 1844. In it he wrote, among other things:
Updated: Tue Nov 06, 2018
6212b15d046c23589a33e9aee52ed1a1 The Pittsburgh Synagogue, Anti-Semitism and Trump for 10/30/2018 Tue, 30 Oct 2018 00:00:00 -0700

All my life I have reminded fellow Jews in America that we are the luckiest Jews to have ever lived in a non-Jewish country. I wanted to patronize local car dealers because I want them to stay in business.

In each case, I experienced the following: I was greeted pleasantly upon entering the dealership. A young salesperson asked if he or she could help me. I told the salesperson the model I was interested in. He or she made a copy of my driver's license and returned with a key to the car, and off we went.

In every instance, the salesperson was sweet, unenthusiastic and largely ignorant of the car in which I was interested.
Updated: Tue Oct 23, 2018
be56756a2b500e04f49d945e80e35f4a When I First Realized America Is Exceptional for 10/16/2018 Tue, 16 Oct 2018 00:00:00 -0700

I moved to California from New York City in 1976. In the column, I made two points. One was that the accusation made against Judge Kavanaugh — for which there is no evidence, that was made by an anti-Trump activist, that concerns an event that allegedly took place in high school 35-plus years ago at an unidentified time and place, that has been either denied or not substantiated by the other named individuals who were allegedly present, and that is against a man known for an entire adulthood of exceptional moral decency — should have been ignored.

I noted that everything I have learned from a lifetime of teaching the Bible and religion led me to value the notion of positively assessing people who may have sinned when young but have led a truly upright life for a long time as adults.
