Has the Bell Begun to Toll for the GOP?

Among the more controversial chapters in "Suicide of a Superpower," my book published last fall, was the one titled, "The End of White America."

It dealt with the demographic decline of the white majority and what it portends for education, the U.S. economy, politics and national unity.

That book and chapter proved the proximate cause of my departure from MSNBC, where the network president declared that subjects such as these are inappropriate for "the national dialogue."

Apparently, the mainstream media are reassessing that.

For, in rare unanimity, The New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today all led yesterday with the same story.

"Whites Account for Under Half of Births in U.S.," blared the Times headline. "Minority Babies Majority in U.S.," echoed the Post. "Minorities Are Now a Majority of Births," proclaimed USA Today.

The USA Today story continued, "The nation's growing diversity has huge implications for education, economics and politics."

Huge is right.

Not only are whites declining as a share of the population, they are declining in real terms. Between 2010 and 2011, the number of births to white women fell 10 percent. The median age of white Americans, now 43 and rising, means that half of all white women have moved past the age that they are ever likely to bear more children.

White America is a dying tribe.

What do these statistics mean politically? Almost surely the end of the Republican Party as a national governing institution.

Republicans now depend on the vanishing majority for fully 90 percent of their votes in presidential elections, while the Democratic Party wins 60 to 70 percent of the Asian and Hispanic vote and 90 to 95 percent of the black vote.

The Democratic base is growing inexorably, while the Republican base is shriveling.

Already, California, Illinois and New York are lost. The GOP has not carried any of the three in five presidential elections. When Texas — where whites are a minority and a declining share of the population — tips, how does the GOP put together an electoral majority?

Western states like Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona, which Republican nominees like Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan swept almost every time they ran, are becoming problematic for the party.

Thus the GOP refrain: We must work harder to win over Hispanics.

Undeniably true. But how does the GOP appeal to them?

Fifty-three percent of all Hispanic children are born out of wedlock, with no father in the home and many of the moms themselves high school dropouts.

Most Hispanic kids thus start school far behind.

In tests of fourth-, eighth- and 12th-graders, their scores are closer to those of African-American kids than whites and Asians. Their dropout rate matches that of black kids. Absent affirmative action, not only are America's colleges and universities but her professions are going to look far more Asian and white than the national population.

Not a formula for social peace.

Comes the reply: We must spend more to close the racial gap in test scores. Yet, according to The Washington Examiner, in the District of Columbia, the community where we have spent perhaps the most per capita to close the racial gap in test scores, the racial gap is by far the largest in the nation.

Not only do we seem not to know how to close it after four decades of plunging trillions into public schools, the country is tapped out. We are in the fourth consecutive year of trillion-dollar deficits, and our largest and richest state, California, just discovered its deficit has exploded to $16 billion.

And why should Hispanics vote Republican?

The majority of Hispanics are among that half of the population that pays no income tax. Why should they vote for a party whose major plank is that it will cut income taxes?

Hispanics benefit disproportionately from government programs.

Government puts their kids in Head Start before public school and provides them with Pell grants and student loans after public school.

From kindergarten through 12th grade, government educates their kids for free. Government provides them with free or subsidized health care through Medicaid and clinics. Government provides their families with public housing and rent supplements. Government provides the food stamps that feed the family. Government provides them with an annual earned income tax credit, a check just for working.

Government provides all these things, and what are Republicans going to do? They promise to cut government.

Again, why should Hispanics vote Republican?

Establishment Republicans say the party should support amnesty for illegal aliens. Yet this would make millions more eligible for federal programs in a country sinking in debt and mean millions more Hispanics going to the polls, and millions more coming to America in anticipation of the next amnesty.

How would that help the GOP?

By endlessly expanding Great Society programs, by lopping taxpayers off tax rolls, by supporting open borders and endless immigration from the Third World, the Republican Party, out of sheer nobility of character, has probably ensured its impending departure from history.

Sir; ...People do not want to share their pointless and meaningless lives with children... They do not want to drive their innocent babes with fear of failure and starvation to the point where their children become immovable and obese with anxiety...They really do not want children they have no time to watch, and dare not let out of their sight...
If you admit the general immorality of a society that would throw open its doors to strangers and give them the same rights and opportunities others have fought and worked for, then you must admit that such immorality began with the rich who never invited anyone in without the prospect of exploiting them... Immigrants have more children because their communities are not fragmented, as ours are... Their language and culture is some what intact, and ours has endured generations of the acid bath we call the melting pot... It is possible that the immigrants and minorities may find their lives in time too hopeless and meaningless to share, but misery must be without hope for people to not share it...
The question you should ask is: Why should we in this land of wealth find our lives so culturally empoverished and financially destitute???... We have valued money instead of honoring honor... Where money is dear, honor is cheap... Actually; honor is priceless, and many of our immigrants still have a sense of honor, but the fact that it can be traded on, bought and sold, means priceless is cheap...
What does some one do once they have sold off the family farm into debt and duress when they have already sold their honor to keep it by hiring illegals to work it... How do such people, after spending their lives denying the rights of the poor to their entitlements say: I too deserve a piece of the commonwealth??? We are a nation with all our capital in hock... We have been transformed from a people with rights into so many beggers with a hand out for a job, for social security, for food stamps- being told we must try harder, work faster, be smarter, pay more, accept less and own nothing- and that we do not have the right...
Why should such slaves as we bring children into slavery... What do we have to offer them, and what will we ever have to offer our children if we do not knock all the high hats of their high horses, and take it back from them??? With wealth goes political rights. .. And we see many immigrants, though minorities, and perhaps because of it, are able to cooperate and stick together as families, never saying individually: When will I get paid; but surviving and prospering together... They do not have to beat their children to get their cooperation... Cooperation is cultural like their honor...
Nor do they have to browbeat their children as is our only option...It clearly does not work... We are raising a national herd of milchcows and steers and calling them our children, loading them up with anxiety and neurosis rather than facing these conditions for ourselves, and dealing with them so our children can be free and happy...They are all more worried about where their next meal is coming from than where their honor lies, or what adventures lie before them...WE all know that it is often an act of heroism to get out of bed, get your boots on, face traffic, danger, and every form of impediment, intimidation, inequity, and insecurity day after day after day to support ones family...
For many of our kids, getting off the couch deserves an Olympic Gold Medal...That is the price of fear and poverty, of parents working for nothing, of crime that takes such a large part of the budget that there are not enough parks, not enough ball fields, not enough social programs or youth clubs, not enough people who can afford to supervise for nothing, and not enough beat cops to make kids feel safe from thugs and perverts...
The only safe place is the home and there one must be turned into an idiot or esshole to be fit for exploitation...What people, under such conditions- would breed??? Most of us are in the middle of slow suicide because we have not the courage that would live with our honor that has already been bartered away...Children cannot have children, and our futures are so overburdened with threat and so without hope that the children we raise are trapped in perpetual childhood...That is your world, made of the principals you hold dear, and now you want to whine about it... .. ...
Why not play Peter Pan for all these lost boys and girls???....Maybe some pixi dust would get them off the couch .. Thanks...Sweeney

That is why the contrast between liberty, freedom, and a small decentralized government vs tyranny and oppression must be clear. People will eventuallly come around to the first if they know. But if republicans are arguing for things like the PATRIOT Act and NDAA then there is not clear contrast. When republicans want to exclude defense spending from budget cuts again not aclear contrast. When psuedo-conservatives like the Bushs are elected and do things like the Iraq war and TRAP, yet again not clear contrast. Lets look at this eelection. Romney? Really? He is the conservative? Gingrich conservative? Santorium conservative? You have got to be kidding me? The republican party is dooomed but not for the reasons Buchanan is talking about. Ron Paul was getting between %10 - %15 for this primary. Most of the conservative college students and enlisted vets backed him. The old republicans buchannan will not be aorund for ever. Do you think you can ignore the new generation of real true conservatives?
