Obama's Trouble with Numbers

Comment

Let's stipulate that it was wrong of Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., to shout "You lie" during President Obama's health care speech. It was a violation of courtesy and etiquette. Wilson apologized — which is more than the Democrats who booed President Bush's State of the Union address in 2005 ever did.

But I confess that watching at home, similar expostulations were heard. Some seemed to have burst, irrepressible, from my own lips.

There was, for starters, this misleading assertion: " ... If you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have health insurance through your job, or Medicare, or Medicaid, or the VA, nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have." Ah, shades of Clintonesque lawyerly evasion. No, it won't "require" you to change, but if the tax treatment changes (and Obama proposes, among other things, to tax high-end plans) and the public option is available, employers may choose to change their offerings and employees will then no longer get to keep their current insurance.

The president then adverted to "more than 30 million American citizens who cannot get coverage." As the Washington Examiner's Byron York notes, the 30 million figure represents a climb down from the president's oft-repeated claim (most recently in August) that there are "47 million uninsured in this country." (The president's track record on numbers is not inspiring. Remember his claim — since debunked — that medical expenses caused a bankruptcy every 30 seconds? Even ABC News called it "unsupportable.")

Perhaps by downgrading to 30 million, President Obama is attempting to exclude an estimated 9.3 million illegal aliens. But look closely at the rest of the uninsured. According to Census and HHS data, 10 million have incomes more than 300 percent of the poverty line, meaning they could afford coverage but for some reason choose to forego it. And speaking of foregoing, 5 million are single childless adults between the ages of 18 and 34. An estimated 6.4 million are "Medicaid undercount," meaning they receive Medicaid or SCHIP but tell census takers otherwise. Another 4.3 million are eligible for Medicaid or other government health programs but have failed to enroll.

That leaves just 10.6 million U.S. citizens below 300 percent of poverty, not eligible for an existing government program, and not between 18 and 34.

So the president's claim that 30 million Americans "cannot get coverage" is, not to say more, inaccurate. So, too, was his statement, uncivil accusation really, that opponents of health care reform have "lied" about his plan providing coverage for illegals. The supposed bar on illegals receiving health coverage only applies to a section of the bill. And Democrats rejected a Republican proposal that would have required verification of eligibility. Ditto for the claim that the Obama plan would not cover abortion expenses. It would not explicitly do so. But money is fungible and it would be impossible to prevent public funds from subsidizing abortions. Again, Republican amendments to prevent taxpayer money from paying for abortions failed. That's revealing.

And then there was this: "Reducing the waste and inefficiency in Medicare and Medicaid will pay for most of this plan." I didn't think until now that President Obama had much of a sense of humor. Perhaps I was wrong. He also claimed that his plan will 1) extend coverage to all; 2) force insurance companies to cover "at no extra charge" routine checkups and screening tests like mammograms and colonoscopies; 3) place limits on how much people can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses; 4) forbid yearly or lifetime caps on coverage — and spend less than we are currently spending! He's not a president; he's a wizard.

But no, the funniest part of the speech was Obama's supposed overture to Republicans on malpractice reform. He is directing the secretary of HHS, he grandly offered, to pursue local "demonstration projects" in tort reform. But states like Texas have already proved the effectiveness of, for example, caps on pain and suffering damages. In any case the idea that some piddly demonstration project that would take several years to complete should be offered as a sop to Republicans while Democrats go about the business of revamping the entire health delivery system today is pretty much of a joke.

The rationale for the speech — that lies, distortions, and misunderstandings account for public opposition to a health care overhaul — was misconceived. This administration — anodyne phrases about bipartisanship notwithstanding — does not see beyond its narrow ideological keyhole. That weakness may prove crippling.

1. 30 million is an understatement
2. Every 30 seconds refers to the number of bankruptcies last year, divided by the number of seconds in the year. Half were health care related. So, there was a bankruptcy every minute.
3. Why don't y'all check out the facts at this link: http://www.factcheck.org/2009/09/obamas-health-care-speech/

Dear Mona Charen, No one seems to care that the drug and insurance companies pay billions to Obama and the politicians, thus costing Taxpayers their very own future for medicine or insurance, not counting the jobs politicians have sold to foreign countries for their own greed. Decades ago, politicians ruined lives with handing out money for social and welfare programs to support all the illegitimates, so they could have more illegitimates and NOW, these illegitimates are coming back to haunt the very communities they were raised in, and the people in these communities still can't accept the fact that they 'created' all this mess and it's not the Taxpayers responsibility to handle any more of their bickering and trying to get someone fired from their job for not protecting them from themselves! Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out these problems, now does it?

The heartbeat of America was textile and furniture manufacturing businesses making and selling their goods; therefore making people able to buy homes, cars and food for their families. Politicians took this away from hardworking taxpaying Americans with their “free trade,” stating America would become a service country. Really, the only servicing being done now is unemployment, social and welfare offices. Are taxpayers getting any benefits from this type governing?

“We need affordable, accessible health care for all” and “Do something for people who are uninsured” makes taxpayers wonder why these people, writing these articles, don't get together and charge everyone $100 to attend a meeting and do something constructive; that is, you could take out a good health insurance plan and look after yourselves, as this is the only way it's going to happen, because America is bankrupt.

Politicians' “Do as we say, not as we do” attitude is quite evident in town hall meetings. They're not interested in me, you, nor our comments.

I, personally, was forced to take Medicare and their drug plan (real jokes). I was happy with my private insurance plan and the deductible. Prior to politicians' mess, doctor visits were less. The politicians stated “I had to do it their way or else.” Needless to say, I wasn't a happy camper. Medicare, Medicaid, health care disaster and anything else the politicians can drum up to take your money is very scary.

A recent statement I received regarding this government rip off: My doctor billed for $233, Medicare paid $76.20, private carrier paid $19.05. Can you see the problem here? Office visits, paid for by me, the patient, at $50, the doctors would be getting a lot more money, less paperwork, and government wouldn't have access to our records, which, incidentally, can be used against us.

In plain English, taxpayers would be better off with their own insurance and their own money. If I were a doctor, I'd be sitting on the front steps of all politicians until they went back to “pay as you go,” thus saving trillions of dollars. Better yet, taxpayers should set up, with a good, honest insurance company, and manage an insurance trust for doctors and hospitals, have all Americans pay $100 each month for each person, and this way, everyone can be insured, pay their fair share and cut out the stealing by the blood-sucking ticks. In the old days, when integrity, honesty and respect stood for something, people paid their own way, paid their own doctors and hospitals and America wasn't bankrupt then. I wonder why?

“Millions face shrinking Social Security payments” – today's' headlines. Politicians robbed the system to pay for all social and welfare programs, to which, of course, these people weren't entitled.

Can't you see that taxpayers are paying for all the extra offices, trips, lunches, fine health care, etc. for politicians, while we're doing without?

America is now an enslaved nation with trillions of dollars of debt and all because of deceit and greed. I'm quoting John Adams: “There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by the sword, the other is by debt.” Surely, you remember history and the dictator that said, “We'll destroy America and never lift a finger.” If this doesn't wake you up, nothing will.

At no time have taxpayers heard the words “We, the politicians, in order to pay off trillions we borrowed without taxpayers consent are going to reduce our benefits, salaries and retirements to $12,000 yearly.”

Great article today Ms.Charen...I found these thoughts..in the last couple days...hope you find them interesting..the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in S.F. said in part.." When a PUBLIC program is offered, no group, specifically illegals aliens ( in the case under review) can be prohibited from participating in the program and any legislation that endeavers to prevent them from full participation is 'UNCONSTITUTIONAL' "..The 'ACE' in the hole for the Health..The key word is "P-U-B-L-I-C'...which the Courts will add after the BILL is passed...If and when the next appointment to the SUPREME COURT is within the FOUR period to the start of the Plan...The public portion will be reinstated by the COURTS....When applying for Social sercurity (card) or a Drivers License the individual who does not have a BIRTH CERTIFICATE ust prove that none exists from the state where he or she was born...Therefore, the individual should obtain a statement to that effect from the VITAL STATISTICS office and use it in conjunction with other documents (such as a CENSUS TRANSCRIPT )...However, a CENSUS TRASCRIPT is an acceptable piece of evidence, when applying for a "DELAYED BIRTH CERTIFICATE"...'THE HAWIIAN GAMBIT' Maybe ?..So in truth all you have to do is make false statements on the CENSUS form and get a copy WHICH YOU CAN then apply for a BC....So if you were not born somewhere there would be no record....If you apply for a student loan you have to provide info in a number of areas..
