Queen Nancy: Fly as I Say, Not as I Fly

Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is the Jennifer Lopez of congressional travel — fickle, demanding and notoriously insensitive to the time, costs and energy needed to accommodate her endless demands. On Tuesday, the indispensable government watchdog Judicial Watch released a trove of public records through the Freedom of Information Act on Pelosi's travel arrangements with the U.S. military.

As speaker of the House, Pelosi is entitled to a reasonable level of military protection and transport. But it's the size of the planes, the frequency of requests and last-minute cancellations, and the political nature of many of her trips that scream out for accountability.

And, of course, it's the double-barreled hypocrisy. There's the eco-hypocrisy of the Democratic leader who wags her finger at the rest of us for our too-big carbon footprints, and crusades for massive taxes and regulation to reduce global warming. Then there's the Bay Area hypocrisy of the woman who represents one of the most anti-military areas of the country soaking up military resources to shuttle her (and her many family members) across the country almost every weekend.

Remember: Pelosi's San Francisco is notorious for banning the Marines' Silent Drill Platoon from filming a recruitment commercial on its streets; killing the JROTC program in the public schools; blocking the retired battleship U.S.S. Iowa from docking in its waters; and attacking the Navy's Blue Angels — which left-wing activists have tried to banish from northern California skies for the past two years.

Apparently, those anti-war protesters have no problem with evil military jets currying Pelosi and her massive entourages to the funerals of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Charlie Norwood; foreign junkets to Rome; and politicized stops to Iowa flood sites to bash the Bush administration. One exasperated Department of Defense official, besieged with itinerary changes and shuttle requests back and forth between San Francisco International Airport and Andrews Air Force Base for Pelosi, her daughter, son-in-law and grandchild, wrote in an e-mail:

"They have a history of canceling many of their past requests. Any chance of politely querying (Pelosi's team) if they really intend to do all of these or are they just picking every weekend? … (T)here's no need to block every weekend 'just in case.'"

Another official pointed out the "hidden costs" associated with the speaker's last-minute changes and cancellations.

"We have … folks prepping the jets and crews driving in (not a short drive for some), cooking meals and preflighting the jets etc." Upset that a specific type of aircraft was not available to her boss, a Pelosi staffer carped to the DoD coordinators: "This is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset speaker."

Three months ago, turmoil erupted over Queen Nancy's demand for the military to reposition her plane to fly out of Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif., closer to where she had "business," instead of San Francisco Airport/SFO (1.5 hours away). A special air missions official wrote: "We have never done this in the past. The deal is … that the Speaker shuttle is from D.C. to SFO and back. We will not reposition. We do not reposition for convenience even for the SECDEF. It is not (too) far of a drive from Travis to SFO. Did the escort suggest to the speaker that this is OK? If so, I hope you guys correct them immediately. If you agree with me that I am correct, then you need to stay strong and present the facts to the speaker's office."

Another official stated bluntly: "We can't reposition the airplane such a short distance. It is not a judicial use of the asset. It is too expensive to operate the jet when there is truly no need to do so."

A beleaguered colleague responded: "(Y)ou know I understand and feel with you … but this is a battle we are bound to lose if we tell the speaker office. In the end, this is what will happen. … I wish that I could say this is a one-time request, but we know it will probably happen again in the future."

In the end, the military won that battle. But a few days later, Pelosi was back with a new demand: that her military plane taking her from D.C. to San Francisco make a stop in New Jersey to bring her and three Democrats to an "innovation forum" at Princeton University involving 21 participants and no audience. A Gulfstream jet was secured for the important "official business."

No word on whether Pelosi required vanilla-scented candles, Evian water and fresh white lilies aboard the flight. But rest assured: Air Diva traveled in style, courtesy of your tax dollars and the forbearance of the U.S. military.

As a fiscal conservative Democrat (who loves to read Michelle to get myself fired up), I have to admit she hit this one dead on. Pelosi is a buffoon, and a hypocrit. However, we can thank the Ex-Prez for this, as he was the one who agreed to the larger plane due to the distance travelled. (Hastert only had a shorter flight to IL). Pelosi is out of touch with the times. She pillories the Wall street robber barons for the lavish lifestyles, then uses our tax dollars to fund her travel. That is just plain WRONG. When are the politicians going to "get it". And for all you right wing nutheads, Republican's are no different than Democrats when it comes to the entitlement they think they are deserving of. Its time for term limits. But, that would require enough partisan voters to actually put their money where their mouth is and vote the scoundrels out of office! I seriously doubt any of you Repubs would do that. FYI....I vote against my Congressman after they have been in office for 8 yrs, and will only vote for my senator twice. I'm one of the few that is a principled voter.

The dumb-as-dirt Michelle Malkin strikes again! And she quoted Judicial Watch, a right-wing group funded by Richard Mellon Scaife, who started the witch-hunt against Clinton in the '90s. Malkin is a failed newspaper writer, so she started a fringe-right blog and attached herself to the failing Pajamas Media. She is Rush Limbaugh in drag, or--more accurately--an Ann Coulter clone. She also steals her material from other right-wing hacks; in this case, Sean Hannity. Here are some facts:
During the February 4 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio program, Sean Hannity again falsely claimed that Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was the first House speaker to be granted the use of a military jet, stating, "No other speaker had one before her." Likewise, on the February 5 edition of his Fox News television show, Hannity stated that Pelosi is the "first speaker to ever have that plane." In fact, as Media Matters for America has documented, House Sergeant-at-Arms Wilson Livingood said in a February 8, 2007, statement: "In a post 9/11 threat environment, it is reasonable and prudent to provide military aircraft to the Speaker for official travel between Washington and her district. The practice began with Speaker [Dennis] Hastert [R-IL] and I have recommended that it continue with Speaker Pelosi." In addition, then-White House press secretary Tony Snow said in a February 7, 2007, White House press briefing, "After September 11th, the Department of Defense -- with the consent of the White House -- agreed that the Speaker of the House should have military transport. ... So Speaker Hastert had access to military aircraft and Speaker Pelosi will, too."

When justice is done, and it may not happen until after Christ returns to earth as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, this woman (Pelosi) will discover what God thinks of her; by then, the die will have been cast, and her future will be forever decided. Life on earth is a preparation for our future-life, and what is done, said, and believed here sets the stage for a long time.

Unmitigated, privileged, arrogance, by one who dictates to us what we should drive, banks what they should not fly, but doesn't seem to worry about her "carbon footprint" and thinks the AIR FORCE is her hand maiden. Since when is it the responsiblility of taxpayers to foot the bill of flying her family, friends etc.? How many did we pay for to go to ROME??? Pelosi is independently wealthy. This is chutzpah, do as I say, not as I do. Corrupt, probably, unethical house ever, yet she likes to tell the rest of us how to live. She is not too good to stop for a fuel stop? She is not queen, even though she seems to think she is. I'm still waiting for that most ethical house in history, but it appears she is part of the unethical ones. Republicans can't hold a candle to the dems when it comes to privilege, ethical lapses, and hoggishness.

Spot on, Michelle!! I'm a military retiree who grew up in SF, Cal, and left. No way do I ever wish to return. Having said that, Nancy ties up military planes I and my wife (and plenty others) can also use to travel (it's one of the military retiree benefits) and there are only a limited number of long-distance capable planes to go around. And I won't mention the advanced planning we need to take advantage of this 'benefit'. That in itself causes me some concern, but more to the point her scheduling antics cause me to wonder. The exception in her case is that she has put her own spin on it and taken it to an extreme. Must be more of that 'change' we all heard so much about. Having said that, she is obviously a hands-down, no holds barred, hypocrite, who likes to split hairs, and we tax payers get to foot the bill. Change has arrived, get used to it America!

Ma'am;... The problem here is quite simple to fix...It is not so simple as to expose the third person from the presidency to terrorism or violence, as you would... But it is a simple solution for simple people.... We are not supposed to have more than one representative for every 30K citizens... We should not have far less.. Now we have one for every 600K... This great number represented makes representatives like the speaker personally powerful; but it makes the whole house powerless.... Not one of those representatives has the full support of their districts... Most house districts are very evenly divided... That gives the representative cover for what ever he wants to do...One side or the other will support his actions... But; it does not give him any moral authority as having nearly a hundred percent support from the voters would... They have to please too many, and they please no one.... They have personal power, but that is stolen power from the people, from the house, which should have a firm hold on the government... They are all too corrupt to be trusted with power, and too divided to get any power for any length of time... We can look at the Supreme Court, and the Presidency, and the Senate as anti democratic even without the partisanship or inevitable corruption.... They would be no match for a house with each member representing only 30 thousand... The house would be great in number and resolved in purpose, and no part of the government could deny their power... Today they are impotent... A woman is a fit representative of all those men... She is the best man for the job... Thanks...Sweeney
