Dear Mark: Thank goodness for the heroic actions by the passengers in thwarting the attempted bombing on the Northwest flight on Christmas. What can we do to prevent further terrorist acts like this? — Fearful of Flying in Fairfax

Dear Fearful: We can start by getting rid of that joke of a homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano. In reference to the attempted bombing, Napolitano claimed on Sunday "the system worked," and then on Monday she admitted the system failed. Next, we should kick President Obama in the tail for not taking terrorism more seriously and for referring to Northwest Airline terrorist Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab as "an isolated extremist." Isolated?? Come on, Mr. President, man up.

Here's my simple solution: If you're a man between the ages of 18 and 34 from a Middle Eastern country friendly to terrorists and you're on a terror watch list, you will be strip searched at every airport. It may not be perfect, but it is definitely better than the knee jerk reaction of telling a grandmother with an overactive bladder she can't use the restroom during the last hour of a flight.

Dear Mark: I'm tired of the Republicans whining about the Democrats' health care legislation and whether we can afford it or not. The latest plan from Congress is projected to be revenue neutral, so be quiet. It seems you Republicans are more interested in making Obama look bad than in caring for the concerns of the nation's people. Why won't you stop? — Non Naysayer in North Texas

Dear Non Naysayer: First of all, it is Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid who are making President Obama look bad with this corrupt legislation. The deficit-reducing talking points of the Senate bill are a big lie and easily debunked.

The Congressional Budget Office projections are based on the fact that taxes will be collected for the first 10 years while services will only be in place for six years. If the Democrats were honest, they would shoot straight and tell the American people the actual cost for 10 years is closer to $2.2 trillion, far from your "revenue neutral" statement. Would you pay a painter full price if he only painted 60 percent of your house?

Second, the government's job is to protect our liberty, not to care for the concerns, as you say, of our nation's people. It is the job of the people to care for their own needs. The majority of Americans are fulfilling this obligation, and various polls have shown that up to 85 percent of citizens are satisfied with their current health care coverage.

Furthermore, between 50 percent and 60 percent of citizens are against the 2,000 page monstrosity coming out of Congress. With these numbers in mind, let's focus on the people who are falling through the cracks before destroying our current system.

Most Americans agree that our health care system needs improvement, but the Democrats' legislation falls far short of President Obama's stated goals of reducing individual costs and increasing access, while reducing the deficit.

Dear Mark: I saw a video of Sen. Max Baucus of Montana speaking about health care on the Senate floor. His speech was slurred, and he appeared drunk. I am appalled by his conduct and disregard for the importance of his job. Do you think this behavior is common? — Hide the Hooch in Hilliard

Dear Hooch: Judging by the legislation coming out of Washington these days, I think they're all drunk. If a senator were speaking and sober, now that would be news.
