Solyndra Scandal and Republican Debates

Comment

Dear Mark: I'm so mad at our president for irresponsibly wasting half a billion dollars of taxpayers' money on the failed solar company Solyndra. During an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, President Obama didn't have the decency to express ANY regret or remorse over his decision to give money to this company. Can't something be done, and shouldn't somebody be fired? — Spitting Fire in Farmville

Dear Spitting: Let's fire them all. It's so ironic or disingenuous or hypocritical — however you wish to put it — that President Obama, Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin and other Democratic bleeding hearts continuously demonize banks and other Wall Street businesses for taking risks with other people's money. Yet look what Obama did with Solyndra. He ignored advice from key advisers who told him Solyndra was a risky investment and poured half a billion dollars of taxpayers' money down the drain, not to mention the loss of 1,100 jobs.

During that same interview, Obama not only said he had no regrets about the Solyndra failure but went on to make this ridiculous justification: "And what we always understood was that not every single business is going to succeed in clean energy. But if we want to compete with China, which is pouring hundreds of billions into this space, if we want to compete with other countries that are heavily subsidizing the industries of the future, we've got to make sure that our guys here in America at least have a shot."

There are three major problems with his statement. First of all, Obama's poor judgment is exactly why the government should not be picking winners and losers in our free markets. Secondly, there is no guarantee that solar energy is the energy of the future, as the technology is far from being perfected, affordable and marketable.

Finally, why in the world should the United States of America follow the lead of a communist country like China or the European socialist economies that are also going broke trying to harness the sun? John Wayne is flipping in his grave.

Dear Mark: After watching the Republican "debates" (and I use the term loosely), one has to wonder whether the individuals in this field of good candidates have a death wish. Why else would they subject themselves to such humiliation by opposition moderators who ask mainly "gotcha" questions?

As I see it, these "debates" perform no constructive purpose other than to weaken the Republican candidate in the eyes of the entire electorate. The opposition stands back and cheers them on, just waiting to battle the weakened survivor. Those who refer to the Republican Party as the "stupid" party might be on to something. Am I missing something here? — Muddled Morfar in MO

Dear Muddled: I understand your frustration, but unfortunately, intramural debates are a necessary evil in our political system. As conservatives, it is difficult to watch decent men and women stand on a national stage and violate Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment: "Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican."

Another unfortunate aspect of these debates is that the media will only cover the most contentious moments, while relentlessly replaying any flubs or miscues to the delight of Team Obama. All we can do is hope the electorate will do their own research instead of relying on sound bites and bumper stickers to make their presidential decision. Yeah, and Sandra Bullock is going to ask me out on a date.
