Obama's Enemies, Judicial Activism and My Election Prediction

Share Comment

Dear Mark: This week, President Barack Obama basically called those who disagree with his policies "enemies." This man came into office proclaiming he wanted to "change" Washington, yet his use of the term "enemies" to describe his fellow Americans is hardly a change. This man is supposed to be the greatest orator of our lifetime. How could he be so careless? — Venting in Vernon

Dear Venting: You can vent all you want to marklevy92@aol.com. Just make sure you also vent at the polls Nov. 2. President Obama was not being careless when he said "punish our enemies"; he was just showing the true colors he developed while sitting in the VIP section of Jeremiah Wright's church all those years.

In a radio interview on Spanish-language Univision, Obama made the following statement: "If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, 'We're going to punish our enemies, and we're going to reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us,' if they don't see that kind of upsurge in voting in this election, then I think it's going to be harder."

I can't deny that there are those on my side of the political fence who believe that President Obama — or any liberal, for that matter — is the enemy. But the president of the United States, especially the oratorically gifted Barack Obama, is supposed to be far above this kind of divisive rhetoric. How can any president refer to any law-abiding citizen as his enemy? The president represents all Americans, and he certainly is not supposed to fan the flames of issues that already divide our country.

Message to President Obama: Iran is our enemy. North Korea is our enemy.

The Taliban are our enemy. Al-Qaida is our enemy. American citizens who simply disagree with your policies are not.

Personally, I do not believe that liberals are my enemy; they just need a little constitutional and economic enlightenment. As far as I'm concerned, you can be liberal until the nongenetically altered cows come home. Just don't do it with my money.

Dear Mark: Senatorial candidate Christine O'Donnell has been rightfully torn apart in the press for not being able to cite specific Supreme Court cases in which she saw judicial activism. You conservatives constantly complain about activist judges overruling the will of the people. — Prove It in Peoria

Dear Prove It: I won't give you a list, but here is one that occurred just recently in Arizona. According to an Associated Press story, "a federal appeals court ... struck down a key part of Arizona's law requiring voters to prove they are citizens before registering to vote and to show identification before casting ballots."

Basically, a panel on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has decided that potential voters only have to swear that they are American citizens; they don't need to provide any proof whatsoever. The law says people may face perjury charges if they are lying. Ooh, that "penalty of perjury" will really stop the fraud in our elections.

Dear Mark: What is your prediction for the midterm elections? — Betting Man in Mississippi

Dear Betting: With respect to Democrats on Tuesday, as Clubber Lang growled in "Rocky III," "My prediction? ... Pain." I also predict that Republicans will pick up 57 seats in the House and pick up eight seats in the Senate. And Nancy Pelosi will pick up her stuff and move out of the speaker's office.
