Health Care as a 'Right' Is Wrong

Share Comment

Dear Mark: President Obama is demanding that Congress give him a health-care bill to sign before the August recess, and now the House Democrats have put one on the table. Why do conservatives like you fight such legislation? Don't we all have a right to health care? — Craving Coverage in Cleveland

Dear Craving: Of course you have a right to health care. You have a right to earn some money and purchase it any time you like. Oh, wait, you think you have a right to health care that somebody else pays for — I'm sorry, but that "right" can't be found anywhere in our Constitution.

For your information, a "right" ceases to be a right when it imposes a duty upon another individual. In this case, the Democrat health-care proposal forces law-abiding citizens to purchase health care for themselves and others or face severe monetary penalties or possibly prison.

Sounds like you don't mind violating your fellow citizens' God given rights just so you can have your government-created "right" to free health care.

The Democrats' plan will also raise taxes on millions of small businesses, which is the last thing our fragile economy needs with its already skyrocketing unemployment. If this bill makes it through the Senate and President Obama signs it into law, the exorbitant increase in taxes will be another broken campaign promise from Mr. Hope and Change.

Dear Mark: My friends think former Vice President Dick Cheney is pure evil. The latest news that he supposedly told the CIA to withhold information from Congress concerning CIA assassin squads appears to support their claim. What can I tell them to convince them they are wrong? — Feeling Friendly Fire in Fargo

Dear Feeling: From the beginning of his vice presidency, the media and libs have treated Cheney as if he was Darth Vader, Satan and the Big Bad Wolf all rolled into one.

My guess is that you won't succeed in convincing your friends any different.

This latest episode of "Cheney Hate" seems more like a case of Hell hath no fury like a House speaker scorned than a legitimate investigation.

Nancy Pelosi was humiliated when she was caught in her own lies concerning CIA briefings and stumbled through her press conference further entangling herself in her own web of deceit. Her calls for an investigation reek of retaliation more so than actual justice. The timing of these leaks is also suspect, considering that President Obama's popularity is declining, his health-care proposal could be on life support and his stimulus package has resulted in higher unemployment. What a convenient diversion.

Dear Mark: Results of a study by Researchers at Keele University in England recently concluded that using curse words might lessen pain. College students submerged their hands in freezing water once while repeating their favorite curse words and once while not swearing. The students were able to hold their hands under the freezing water longer while cursing. Does this study have any significant relevance to mankind? — Soapy Mouth in Sioux Falls

Dear Soapy: I suppose the experiment is significant if you're an Eskimo — but with liberals convinced global warming is real, why even worry about the pain from ice water? I need something to ease the pain when I watch Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews. I know for a fact that cursing — or, as we say in Texas, cussing at the television — does no good when those two yahoos are spinning and mangling the truth.
