Downgrade Blame and Presidential Definitions

Comment

Dear Mark: The tea party is causing all kinds of problems for the country. I agree with politicians like John Kerry that the recent S and P downgrade is actually a "tea party downgrade." Because of those idiots, the debt ceiling debate took too long and showed the world the chaos in our government. — Ban Those Bozos, in Birmingham

Dear Ban: Blaming the tea party's battle in Congress for the country's poor credit rating reminds me of the couple who applied for a new home loan. The two were upside down with their current home and car loans and had maxed out all of their credit cards. The bank subsequently denied their loan application. Instead of looking at their poor financial situation that was bleeding more red than a vampire convention, the couple blamed the fight they had over the wife burning the meatloaf.

Essentially, the Obama administration is doing the same thing by blaming the debate itself for the credit rating downgrade as opposed to blaming poor monetary management and financial oversight for the horrible fiscal condition the country is in. The ratings agencies have been warning Congress and the president for months that the country's Triple-A rating was in jeopardy if significant action was not taken to address the national debt. True to form, Congress and Obama basically did nothing.

It is also comical for major Democrats to blame the tea party for all of the country's ills when the tea party has only had an actual voting influence in Congress for eight months. Compare that to John Kerry, who has been in Congress for 25 years, Harry Reid 25 years, Nancy Pelosi 24 years and Barney Frank 31 years, and you just might begin to see who the real culprits are.

Quite frankly, I'm embarrassed for the Democratic Party that they can't come up with a more creative political strategy than to simply blame the tea party.

The Democratic playbook must be the shortest book in history.

Dear Mark: President Obama has given a series of speeches recently on the economy, in which he basically hammers home the same points: raise taxes on millionaires and billionaires, develop a balanced approach to reduce the national debt, and everybody must pay their fair share. That all sounds fine and dandy, but where is his actual plan? — Looking High and Low in Ohio

Dear Looking: Don't bother looking, because the president has no specific plan; he has only poll-tested talking points. If he had an actual plan to reduce the deficit, there would be specific numbers scored by the Congressional Budget Office that we could all discuss. Instead of a plan, Obama has chosen to sanctimoniously scold Congress for inaction while acting as if his policies had nothing to do with the fiscal mess the country is in.

The larger problem I have with the president's lectures, uh, I mean speeches, is that Obama doesn't seem to know the definition of certain words. For instance, when he says "everybody" must pay their fair share, he only means those in the top tax bracket should pay more. According to my dictionary, "everybody" would include those 47 percent of tax filers who pay no federal income taxes whatsoever. When Obama says he only wants to raise taxes on "millionaires and billionaires," he conveniently forgets to mention that his plan would raise taxes on anyone making $200,000 or more. I guess that's what happens when a person gets a free Harvard education.

I agree there is nothing more pathetic than the Democratic Party right now, not to mention the Repes for that matter, but if you fail to recognize the tea party as an equally disturbing sign of the degeneration of American politics and culture, you are ignoring a Yugoslavia-style peril to everything we treasure in this country.
