Who is to blame when a drug addict dies?

We now know the L.A. County Coroner's Office considers the death of Michael Jackson to have been a homicide caused by acute propofol intoxication and the effects of five other powerful prescription drugs found in his system.

If the L.A. district attorney chooses to charge Michael Jackson's personal doctor, it could very well be for manslaughter.

Realistically speaking, it was more like assisted suicide.

Michael Jackson struggled with addiction for years. He went into drug rehab in 1993. He was often very obviously overmedicated during his 2005 child sex-abuse trial. And during the run-up to his massive comeback concert tour this year, we've now learned he was engaged in an orgy of drugs and self-destructive behavior.

So doesn't Michael Jackson bear some of the responsibility for his own death?

Before you answer, let me tell you about a sworn affidavit, attached to a now unsealed search warrant, which outlines excruciating details about the tragic last days of Michael Jackson. In the final hours of his life, he was injected by his doctor or was given oral doses of no fewer than four heavy-duty drugs. The last medication given was propofol. There are indications that when the doctor was not in the room, Jackson may have sneaked even more medications in his continuing quest to end his insomnia. It's typical addict behavior.

At Jackson's bedside when he died, there was a cornucopia of prescription pills, ordered up by several different doctors using fictitious patient names. It is a federal offense to prescribe pharmaceuticals under an alias. But there they were: bottles of Valium, Tamsulosin, Lorazepam, Temazepam, Clonazepam, Trazodone and Tizanidine. Drugs used as hypnotic sedatives, to reduce pain, anxiety and muscle tension. Some treated sleeplessness. Others have a relatively high addictive potential, and some are frequently sold and abused as street drugs. Finally, there was one prescription to treat an enlarged prostate, a nod to Jackson's over-50 status.

In other words, one glance at that nightstand and a red flag should have gone up to any trained doctor that this was not a person for whom one should prescribe more drugs. But according to that sworn affidavit, several doctors did — a cardiologist, a dermatologist and a general practitioner among them.

Others known to have prescribed to Jackson in the recent past include at least two anesthesiologists, a plastic surgeon, a dentist and other general practitioners. Jackson had obviously been doctor shopping — but the doctors were celebrity shopping, no doubt.

Don't the doctors bear some responsibility for Jackson's death?

And what responsibility do the die-hard Michael Jackson fans bear for their blind worship? His drug addiction was no secret, yet the throngs of his followers continued to be dazzled by his stardom. Their continuing admiration sent a signal to both Jackson and his doctors that celebrity trumps all the normal rules.

The status quo was working, and there was no reason for the superstar to change his ways, no pressure from the entourage, because those who tried to warn Jackson to take care of his health were banished. As Jackson continued to demand more medications, there were more people brought in to his long, slow suicidal process. Actually, it's a wonder he lived as long as he did.

Michael Jackson suffered from a lot of obvious maladies, many self-inflicted. Not only was he abusing massive amounts of drugs, he suffered from anexoria and a body dysmorphic disorder that compelled him to repeatedly hire doctors to change his face. He had children who didn't know their mothers. He shut out much of his family lest they tell him how to live his life. And he seemed a reclusive, nomadic hermit who was never quite able to shake the taint of his child molestation trial acquittal.

Yet there were legions of fans that sent him the message that he was the best, the king! And there were countless doctors standing by to prescribe what he needed to get through his days.

Even in death there is blind adoration. A politician in New York is pushing to get a Brooklyn subway station — the venue for one of Jackson's music videos — named after him. A U.S. congresswoman pushed for an official House of Representatives commendation for the entertainer. There has been a movement to get a Michael Jackson postage stamp. What's wrong with this picture?

As I wrote in this space recently, there are record numbers of Americans — tens of millions of them — using and abusing prescription drugs. They are sick people in need of help, either for their underlying illness or for their addiction to these drugs. While I've always advocated personal responsibility, I've come to realize the responsibility must radiate outward, too.

Everyone who's ever enabled a drug addict shares in the responsibility.

Rarely do I agree with the conservative columnists on this site, but Dimond nailed it on Jackson. The fact that he was brilliantly talented -- and he was -- doesn't mitigate any of what she wrote.

Drug addiction comes in many forms and pharmaceutical companies engage in it legally. Lawyers will profit mightily from this situation as usual. Money will change hands and the problem will carry on at the expense of another living human being.
And now, the publicity hounds appear out of nowhere exploiting the poor man's demise, but where were was their outrage before as he was approaching the climax of his sad final ending.

Jeez, every one has an opinion about MIchael Jackson, his "alleged" addiction, his death, his "last days" etc etc. That is exactly what this is. Although it is written as if it is fact, which is what the tabloids do, which is what this writer is about. Please, people, Diane Dimond has had some sort of fixation, fetish, obsession, call it what you will, about Michael Jackson for decades and It has always been negative, so don't believe everything you read. She certainly did not "nail" anything....another uninformed opinion.....there are no facts here.

For those of you who read this article, please make note that it is not news, it is an opinion. It is the opinion of someone who has made it her business to make negative comments and write negative articles on Michael Jackson since she started hunting (should I say haunting?) him in 1993. Dimond is not an MD, nor a psychologist or psychiatrist several of whom have expressed that Mr. Jackson was not an addict. The only drugs in his system, according to the autopsy, were the ones administered to him by his physician. He was considered healthy and his organs were in good condition which would not have been the case had he been an addict. The comment about Mr. Jackson possibly sneaking more medication after the doctor left the room has been refuted by the coroner who took that into consideration. Apparently the fact that the IV was located in his leg would have made it next to impossible for him to have been able to bend that leg to inject himself. Another case where her opinion was based on her biased speculation. If you want the truth don't read her. She talks about personal responsibility. She needs to look deep inside herself. If someone did to her what she did to him, lie and manipulate information, she would not like it at all.

Re: mjlover4life Is she ever going to stop?? What's wrong with her? I can't believe that this person is still posting her opinion! Who cares about her opinion??? Whole world has read the autopsy and we are not stupid! We can read and understand too! If there is something we don't understand, we ask a doctor!
Michael was responsible for his own death??? Millions believe that i'ts somebody's fault that Michael died, she thinks that Michael was responsible! If it was one of her friends that would die like that, I am wondering whether she would be saying the same stupidities!
At the end she will blame us fans for Michael's death. She is saying it in other words! Oh my God! Will she ever quit???

Re: Blackjet88: Agreed. Not only is this her opinion but it is the one (negative) that she has to maintain, because the media discovered that negative media made them millions. This woman cannot even write a coherent piece (let's forget that it ignores all known forensic facts about the condition of Michael's body and the kind and quantity of drugs in his body. As you also stated, the MEDICAL EXAMINER reported Michael had only a few medical problems that would be expected in a 50 year old man; and that there was no evidence of damage to his body from long-term drug use; and no evidence of his taking huge amounts of drugs to the point of ridiculousness (50 Xanax pills per day which would have put him into a coma and respiratory arrest). But it doesn't matter how ridiculous it is, the press will print it. Commonsense would tell someone that couldn't be possible. But it doesn't matter because there are no ethics in journalism (and this woman is not a journalist, nor is she a good writer of either fiction or the truth).
I mean look at this article (you guys look at it, I can barely stand to do so). She starts off the article as though she is going to write about drug addiction as it could relate to the reader. She doesn't even lead into anything about drug addiction in general, in particular, and then how it differently or especially affects the famous; such as, one Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley for that matter, who, if one can ever believe what one reads had 14 different drugs in his body - all prescribed by his doctor. Nope, writes one sentence and then launches into Michael Jackson...what? Where's the lead in? That first "sentence"?
What a hack.
But hacks depend on a gullible and insatiable (and lazy) public that will gobble at the table of sensationalism.
This woman wouldn't know or recognize a fact if it slapped her.
As for Eva..who can't believe someone keeps posting her opinion (it's call Freedom of Speech, you ****), I can't believe Diane Dimond is still posting her opinion as fact. As long as hacks like her, that present themselves as journalist keep feeding the idiot public this kind of garbage as researched fact, we are all destined for hell as a nation and people like MJLover and me will keep posting and exposing people like her.
Eva, sweetie, when is Diane Dimond going to stop posting her opinions about Michael Jackson...that's what you should find incredulous. Why is she doing it? To save the children? She cares not a wit about them. If she did. She would leave a dead man who cannot defend himself alone and start writing about something really important. Like about the plight of poor children in this country, or child labor, or the genocide of children. She would interview a doctor who gives of his time in foreign countries to provide medical care. Or she would donate to a charity and promote the charity in her "articles".
Of if she really gave a damn, she would have called 911, the cops, or child protective services instead of claiming she saw a video of Michael molesting children (which of course never existed because she is a liar and she would have given it to the DA). No instead she listened with glee, salivating the entire time, to obvious money-grabbing liars who changed their stories depending on how much money they were offered.
Eva, darling, sweetie stop reading (and believing) drivel by Diane Dimond, and get a clue.
