Cheering For a Massive Deficit?

Share Comment

A calm Sunday breakfast might have been ruined after a glance at The Washington Post's front page on June 14. A chart below the fold explained that under Obama's federal spending proposals, the United States would be required to borrow $9 trillion during the next decade. That's $9,000,000,000. The Post compared that, in today's dollars, to the financial burden of World War II: $3.6 trillion. That's not all of Obama's spending plan. That's only the part that's in the red.

Is it any wonder that a recent Gallup poll found more people disapprove rather than approve of Obama's handling of the deficit? But we've only just begun. Now President Obama wants to add another enormous chunk of government health-care spending. The Congressional Budget Office projects that the latest Democratic bill in the Senate would add another $1 trillion to the budget over the next decade, and they suggest that's only a partial estimate.

Remember when the Democrats and their media allies wailed about how the Iraq war wastefully drove up the national debt? The Post's chart estimated that the Iraq war costs from 2003-2008 totaled $551 billion, a pittance compared to the massive load of debt the Democrats want to pass right now. And they want to pass it at breakneck speed, so just like the "stimulus" bill, it will become law before the public learns its manifold outrages.

Sadly, this Washington Post article notwithstanding, the news media aren't questioning the new health "reform" drive. They are enabling it.

ABC News has announced plans to put Barack Obama in prime time again from the White House to push his health-nationalizing agenda for an hour — and then another half-hour on "Nightline." ABC will broadcast live from the White House for "World News" and "Good Morning America," interviewing both Barack and Michelle Obama.

It's bad enough that NBC News just gave Obama two hours of fluffy promotion in prime time (followed quickly by two hours of prime-time fluff reruns). Now, ABC isn't going to promote how Obama buys hamburgers for the staff and has a cute puppy. They're going to help him sell his hard-left "Prescription for America."

Forget participation.

ABC isn't allowing time even for any official Republican rebuttal. Republicans will have to hope they find a spot or two in the audience ABC News selects with the promise of "divergent opinions in this historic debate." ABC also promises the participation of their medical correspondent Dr. Tim Johnson, who's been a blatant cheerleader for a European-style "right" to health care.

This isn't unprecedented. ABC handed over two hours of morning airtime after Columbine for Bill and Hillary Clinton to lament our country's gun culture in 1999. In 1994, NBC News offered the Clintons a two-hour special to promote Hillary-care, paid for by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a major supporter of socialized medicine. The Democrats always seem "overprivileged" when they want to sell their programs on network news.

Skepticism is warranted when ABC promises "divergent opinions," which probably means a debate between leftists, that people who want a single-payer socialist system will be granted the floor. If the past is prologue, if Charlie Gibson has any tough questions for Obama, he'll be asking him to explain why our ultraliberal president's too much of a conservative on health care. Gibson angered President Clinton during the 1999 Columbine special by insisting he wasn't enough of a gun-banner. He said a friend of Clinton's complained the Colorado high school shooting "seared the national conscience," and yet "the president had a chance to roar on gun control and he meowed."

More conservative White Houses have not been awarded a supportive network platform. Does anyone remember that ABC prime-time special that allowed President Bush to sell Social Security privatization in 2005? Or the two-hour 2006 prime-time Bush White House special promoting the War on Terror? Try not to laugh too hard at the impossibility of such a concept.

You can just hear the protests, can't you? "Why, we can't do that! We're journalists!"

In prime time, Barack Obama is overexposed and under-challenged. If ABC wants to add any sliver of credibility to all this freely offered airtime, it will ask the president to defend adding $10 trillion to the national debt in the decade to come, and ask if the current government's priorities should really require a deficit three times the "investment" of World War II.

"Another 1 Trillion" added to the deficit over 10 years. I assume you were talking about the Health care bill that will save lives and improve the quality of life for all Americans not just the 43,000,000 without any sort of health coverage today. You actually have the audacity to compare the healthcare money with the 551 million spent over 5 years, (1 trillion over 10 years) and the 4300 + american lives lost and 31,000 + wounded since the war in Irag started in 2003 ???
My God man, what price do you equate with each life lost during your party's recent "conservative" run in the whitehouse - a run that included 6 years of a Republican congress holding the purse strings! What price do you equate with the cost of each wounded soldier's healthcare, how 'bout their families cost to care for them, how 'bout the thousands and thousands of Iraqi deaths ???
Who for crying out loud was in the watchtower during the "rape" of the middle and lower class that resulted in the unethical subprime lending practices and the current economic collapse that has bankrupt millions of Americans ? You know, the collapse that has created the BILLIONS of dollars paid out to these same Republican criminals who put themselves over country and now is part of this huge deficit you want to equate with Obama. Your party made this mess, the next time you want to point the finger at Obama n the Democrats, it might serve you well to remember there's three more pointing right back at you and your Republican party......a party that "sold out" to big oil companies and fat cat lobbyists, which resulted in a war we're still in and a depression the likes of which hasn't been seen since Franklin D. Roosevelt.

May I suggest you just hush up and remember its better to say nothing and appear ignorant, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

One correction:
9 Trillion is
9,000,000,000,000
not
9,000,000,000
which is 9 billion.
9 billion is closer to the amount that will be wasted/stolen/mismanaged.

Right-wing racist radio jocks fill 10 to 11 straight hours of uninterrupted commentay every day Monday through Friday......88 hours of propaganda time. Then they have the audacity to cry that the meadia is biased???? Don't make me laugh. The crybaby mantra of each of these radio jocks, is that the return of the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE will put them out of business. They are terrified that their distortions will have to be pointed out each day.
Here is the latest distortion by Rush Limbaugh. "...ADOLPH HITLER was a left-winger." This comment was outrageous and very anti-semetic. My family fled Germany in the 1930s when this right-wing thug took power and opressed and murdered people. Hitler was nothing close to a left-winger. (Rush was distorting the truth in an attempt to smear left-wingers for the three recent shootings at the abortion clinic, the recruiting center, and the holocaust museum) Yet no one challenged Rush on this smear because they don't have radio time to respond. So much for the so called fact that the media is biased.

Mr. Bozell is a fan of Cheney who said "deficits don't matter". Do you suppose Mr. Bozell now knows that Cheney is an idiot for asserting that?
Like most right-wingers Mr. Bozell doesn't believe in accountability. Most of the the deficit spending was proposed by Bush. Mr. Bozell isn't honest enough to admit even the most obvious facts into this discussion.

Sir;... Two questions... Who cares; and why care??? The numbers are only money and the money is only paper with dead presidents, and not one part of either would have any meaning if people did not give them meaning... There is supposed to be something behind them to justify the meaning.. There should be some relationship between people, to help the money to mean something, but our relationships have been nearly destroyed to have forms like money...There is a reason the government runs such deficits...It has not got the courage to tax the only people with the ability to pay, and it has taxed anyone it can squeeze into destitution... So tell me how the money is supposed to have some deep meaning when no one but the rich have it??? How is it supposed to have meaning, and why should anyone want it when it does not mean honor, but esshole... The only reason the rich care about the deficit is that they know inflation robs from all people, and adds to the volatility of society... If they really cared, they would pay their share...If they really cared they would not put the whole weight of the country upon the backs of those who have gained the least from it... Consider that the government as a form is not any better than the money, and the money could turn to crap at any time... By the time they grow the courage to tax the rich, it all may be too late... This health care issue will tell the people a lot, especially if the swine flu hits with a vengeance...All the infratructure has been starved to make the rich richer still... When it starts falling down or failing the people on a regular basis; do you think people will not ask why... The truth is going to rub egg on your faces, and everyone is going to recognize the enemy...Thanks...Sweeney
