Why Christmas Matters

by Bill O'Reilly

In 1870, President Grant signed a law making Christmas Day a federal holiday, a national day of celebration. Congress overwhelmingly voted to make that happen, and Grant understood that this was not a trivial gesture. The nation remained deeply divided in the aftermath of the Civil War, and the federal government was looking for ways to reunite the people. Since Christmas was loved by almost everyone, the national holiday became a symbol of healing and unity.

Sir;... Most of us have began as Christians no matter how we have ended up; so let me suggest that it is Christians acting as any group having power in any country who have robbed Christianity of meaning... We see how it is traded for wealth or political power... It does not stop us from acting as Christians, caring for our fellow human being, loving one another; but official Christianity has become the religion of Capital, of exploitation, of pollution and war... No human being can follow the preaching of evangelical televangelists without revulsion... The Catholics have their power structure; and their puppets in law and government... What have they done for the poor but multiply their number??? They hate democracy, and they hate the people, and like the power structure in Jerusalem they are trading all their humanity for one more piece of gold.... If Christianity is losing its power over this people the Christians who have so often profited by their faith have no one to blame but themselves...Jesus can take care of himself... When the people have been so often robbed that all they have left is their prayers, then they are demoralized in fact... We have justified injustice so long as it was suffered by others, and now that it is suffered by us we suffer as guilty... WE chose to deny the poor our help, our tax dollars, national insurance, or fair wages; and now that we are the poor, watch us babble out our prayers through our tears... Let us join the home less, the food less, those without education, or hope, or jobs... Is this God's fault??? Is this the work of men; work we have been turned to ouselves to empower the rich and enrichen the powerful men of God??? It is right that religion should lose it's power over us... It is right that Christianity should be revealed to us... We should all see that it is only a prop to our real national religion, and that is capitalism, the one true faith..God is Capital.... Bless You... Sweeney
