Who's on Trial, Sotomayor or Republicans?

by Miguel Perez

When I dared to suggest that Sonia Sotomayor could be a shoo-in for a Supreme Court nomination — three weeks before President Barack Obama actually picked her — some people told me I had gone too far out on a limb.

"Estás loco," some of my friends told me. They said that my longing for Hispanic representation on the high court had distorted my sense of reality. Some said I was dreaming, and others called me delusional.

Frankly, I still think it was a ...

I surely am very disappointed in you Mr. Perez, you are one of my faviorte panelists at Lou Dobbs. I have heard your statement on journalism in this country and in a word you have said it is dead. According to you the media/written news has such a bias towards Obama they can't be considered jounalist anymore. They don't hold his feet to the fire, you said. Yet a couple of weeks ago I here you make a statement on Lou Dobbs that Sotomayor is to hispanics what Obama is to African Americans. I guess I'm to interpret that, as a hispanic you aren't going to judge this lady the same way you would judge any other Supreme Court Nominee? Will she get an automatic pass from you, should she? By the way, the statement she made about a Latino women coming to a better conclusion than a older white male wasn't made just once according to what I'm hearing it looks like about 8 times now. I would say that is more than just, she miss spoke. Mr. Perez how do you feel about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights? Perhaps you might want to check out where she stands on the right to bear arms issue and the abortion issue. According to one Senator she was unwilling to say the second amendment protects a fundamental right that applies to all Americans. Sotomayor is a Catholic but says she doesn't share the Churches commitment to protect the unborn. When further questioned by the Senator if the unborn have any rights whatsoever, her answer, she had never thought about it! Really, and you wonder why the GOP is concerned. I'm concerned as a Conservative about these issues. I wonder where she stands on the Fairness Doctrine you know that silly little thing we Conservatives call Free Speech. I'm sure you are interested in that since you have many times commented on Castro's Cuba and his people in prison for life because they spoke out. To trot out the race card to intimidate the GOP is exactly what's happening here, you do know where Conservatives stand on issues and she doesn't stand in that same corner so they are worried about these ISSUES Mr. Perez. Please don't disappoint a fan that thinks a great deal about you and your opinions, don't make this about race, it's beneath you!

Sotomayor is NOT a racist? Is that why she is a member of LA RAZA? Perhaps you are only a racist when you are a white male talking about any other race. When people have banished the white male who will they rebel against next? Why is it not racist to be against Attorney General Gonzalez or Justice Thomas? You really need to get it together before you write these columns.

Did not Sotomoyer say she was appointed because of affirmative action! She stated there were others more qualified than she was, but she was a recipient of affirmative action bias even though she was born in the U.S. Imagine your outrage at a KKK member seeking a seat on the court - KKK is no different than "La Raza". Bigots come in all genders, colors, and ethnicities. Perhaps she should open a Taco stand or am I being a bit racist??? Ed Filardo

I wonder what Mr. Perez thinks of the treatment that the Democrats gave Miguel Estrada 2 years ago. President Bush nominated Mr. Estrada to a lower court, but always with the vision of letting him work up to the Supreme Court. Mr. Estrada also had a very good story of his struggles, and achievements, he's a very smart and an experienced judge, he had all the qualifications, yet the Democrats waved a battle against him , one of the reasons was because he was a Latino. Does it only count when you're a left wing Democrat Latino?
