How on earth did this happen?

General Motors, the 100-year-old car company that once employed more than 500,000 workers and had a 50 percent market share, just crumbled into bankruptcy. The government now runs it.

In the mid-'70s, I attended law school in Michigan. Even back then, foreign automakers — especially the Japanese — steadily shaved off market share from the once-mighty Big Three: GM, Chrysler and Ford.

Very good Larry, Aneighbor explained to me that one day he turned to God, got convicted that he should be working. He stopped taking part in the three hour card games at his GM plant. A union thug gave him a hard time because by his producing he was making the rest of them look bad. They could not claim they were overloaded. Slothfulness, underhandedness by union freeloaders, etc have caused the demise and even more as you aptly put, our own governement who does not work in the real world also enabled it.
