Very good Larry,
Aneighbor explained to me that one day he turned to God, got convicted that he should be working. He stopped taking part in the three hour card games at his GM plant. A union thug gave him a hard time because by his producing he was making the rest of them look bad.
They could not claim they were overloaded.
Slothfulness, underhandedness by union freeloaders, etc have caused the demise and even more as you aptly put, our own governement who does not work in the real world also enabled it.
