Where the Ducks Are

by Pat Buchanan

"You go hunting where the ducks are," said Barry Goldwater.

The successor to Barry's Senate seat apparently believes that ducks come from Mexico and speak Spanish. For in July alone, John McCain made three separate appearances before Hispanic groups.

Last week, he spoke to La Raza (The Race), where rival Barack Obama said, "The Latino community holds the election in its hands."

McCain would appear to agree. But are he and the GOP letting go of the bird ...

Sir; Why don't you tell the truth. The whites of Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are not warry of Mr. Obama; They just don't like Blacks and their surly attitudes, their loud mouths, their grievances, and the way they trash every place they can get a hold of. As anti affirmative action referendums reveal, we would deny them the ladder to equality in every instance if we could. And it might surprise some, but the Spanish of Puerto Rico resent the Spanish of Mexico who are beating them out of what is rightfully theirs, and neither group of Spanish think highly of the Blacks who appear lazy and unwilling to cooperate without something in it for them. I am with the Blacks. Honest to God. If work isn't worth a fair wage how on earth can labor be worthy of a man? The problem is not that the blacks have too many rights, but that in denying equality to Blacks we stand on our own feet and get no where trying to progress. We have a perception of rights in this country that is fundamentally wrong, and it is hindering our progress as a people. We see clearly that when new people come to this land that we lose rights, and we see that as the Blacks have gained that we have lost. This is because we think of rights quantitatively rather than qualitatively of rights. We are certainly right to see that the loss of rights means a corrusponding loss of political power. But as a quality, rights can do no more than make one the equal of another. What Whites do not see, or Blacks for that matter, is that some part of what we generally consider rights are quantitative. That man with Property, what ever his color, has more rights than one who has none; and that one with more property has more rights than one with less property. That notion of rights of resulting from what a man possesses, and not resulting from Being a Citizen steals the meaning from all civil rights, because they make the powerful more powerful, and make of civil and equal rights an empty vessel. Read your history sir. It is not the poor, the possessed ones, or the huddled masses that lead countries into decay, and demoralization. It is the rich that benefit from every unpaved road and every enenforced right. It is they who lead government astray. It is they who have led us into depression, and pointless wars. So; Blame the vicitms. I trust many will do just that in the next election. I trust many will not see the benefit of equality in society, and will express their contempt of all Blacks by voting against a single Black. If I were the democratic party, I would have found a more acceptible candidate than either front runner because I am well aware of how petty and ignorant we can be as a people. If we were virtuous, kind, freedom loving, liberal, brave, honest, and honorable we would not possibly be led into greater and greater examples of vice. That is the problem with civilizations. They all rot from the top down, but they rot through and through, and the American civilization must either redeem itself with revolution or accept the fate of all civilizations past.
