What We're Buying at College
by Mona Charen
This week millions of high school seniors across the nation will mail forms and checks to colleges announcing their intention to matriculate. It's the culmination of what some say was the toughest year ever to pry open the golden doors of academe.
My husband and I are still a few years away from writing those whopping checks to doubtless already well-endowed institutions, but a spirit of rebellion stirs in my soul at the thought of it. We tamely fork over tens of thousands of dollars ( ...

This is an interesting form of terrorism. When 1984 was "out there" as unthinkable, especially in the U.S., we pampered poodles of the 70's blithlely penned our essays and submitted them without excessive consideration as to the professors' opinion, although we didn't want to be blatant in opposing his/her political stance for fear our grade might suffer a point or so. Political Correctness is a heinous tyranny and has been as greedily and sheep-likedly assimilated into our culture as the global warming scam. One might hope this were a transient fad which will evaporate into ephemera once a more rational ideology is established as current, but methinks the fascistic rewriters of history who love to insinuate their perversions into the dominant thought and who pursue the mandation of their weltanshauung as authority will not rest until everyone partakes, either voluntarily or under threat of fine, imprisonment, or banishment from employment, of their position. These gangsters have tunneled into all levels of education, so putting hope in academe as the place to receive truth and sanity is fatuous. Word of mouth (beware bugs and spies in your bedrooms) and a diligent searching out of truth-tellers such as Mona Charen will provide the information one needs to evaluate current goings-on in our society. Go ahead and call me a Bible-thumper, but Scripture is the one source of dependable and rational information about this fallen world. Prognosis: it gets worse before it gets better.

The information on the Colorado College "Monthly Bag" incident is incorrect. The students in question were not threatened with expulsion, and they received no sanction or punishment. Their flier included references to guns, sniper rifles and survival rates, and appeared anonymously just two weeks after the killings at Northern Illinois University. Upon seeing it, professors, staff members and students -- male and female -- were alarmed and concerned for their safety. The "Monthly Rag" did not make an "approving" mention of castration. It included a brief about the vagina dentata, a multicultural myth often interpreted to be about fear of castration. The myth itself depicts women unfavorably.

Here is one suggestion: If you are not happy with the atmosphere on a university campus, don't go there! In this country many wonderful private schools offer an exceptional education without the PC. My husband taught 20 years at Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, MI--a small private Christian school with many outstanding teachers and programs. My brother-in-law teaches at Hillsdale College, another fine conservative school.
It is my personal opinion, after all 4 of my children attended SAU, that these private schools provide a superior educational product. Reading Phyllis Schlafly's Education Reporter has been eye-opening. For example, she reported on the types of English classes the Virginia Tech killer might have taken there as an English major. It was disgusting! No wonder he was disturbed! Many state schools no longer teach the humanities as we knew them. Instead of reading Shakespeare or other classic authors, they read modern PC trash. But at SAU, students still become acquainted with such standards as Aristotle.
They also receive more personal attention from teachers whose primary focus is the classroom rather than "publish or perish."
For students who are forced to attend a public university rife with brainwashing, I hope they at least find some support from other sane people in organizations like Eagle Forum or campus Christian groups.
Thank you for bringing up this important topic.
