Tiananmen Moments

by Pat Buchanan

On Dec. 14, 1825, following the death of Alexander I — who had seen off Napoleon — his brother, the grand duke, who had just taken the oath as Czar Nicholas I, was confronted by mutinous troops and rebels in Senate Square before the Winter Palace.

For hours, the czar stood at the end of the square as the crowd shouted for a constitution or for Nicholas' brother Constantine to take the throne. Shots were exchanged.

As darkness fell, a czarist general rode up to Nichol ...

Sir;... Louis Leroy made a mistake in France that no Corsican would ever make... Napoleon made his bones turning the cannon on the people, and he exhausted their revolutionary fever with bloodletting all over Europe... Naturally he would look at any Fox identifying with the chickens as an idiot... But Louis was and idiot. He and his fathers had mis-managed the affairs of France...To have Monarchy they had torn down all the walls of every city so when the end came they had no refuge...But financially; they were bankrupt, and morally bankrupt... They had no defense against the age of reason or the Protestant reformation... They could not beat the British, or the Prussians, and they could not find peace...When the end came it took little more than more of incompetence to exhaust the patience of the poor... It is not all that likely that turning the guns on the population would have helped... The difference between the king and the tyrant are obvious... The tyrant is not legitmate... He cares nothing for the law he writes...Napoleon hated the Jacobins, and he rounded them up at the first pretext, and sent them to Devils Island... And the people loved him, because for a moment in time he held the world in fear and awe of France...People seem to love nothing better than to take off the greasy shorts of the fearful, and put on the crisp shorts of the feared... We have our heroes too... It is not uncommon for a whore to celebrate a pimp's birthday, but the love is only one way...If you get my point, it is that unless a government can and will suppress its own people it will not be good for much else... Ceasar first conquered Rome... Elizibeth first conquered England, and Napoleon first conquered France..Ditto for hitler and stalin for their respective countries...The reason we cannot quite manage to become an empire is that no one has troubled to cow us at the point of a gun...It might be argued that we are already too demoralized by religion and economy to present much problem to the forces of empire, but just to be safe we should be told firmly and finally that we have no rights our leaders need to respect...What we see in Iran is a test of legitimacy...If the Mullahs can keep power without firing on the crowd they can take care of the malcontents at their leisure...In Islam, one can always tell when a regime is doomed because they will not be prayed for at Friday prayers...Since they own the Mosques it is unlikely the Mullahs will not pray for themselves...In any event, as you point out, this is a power struggle between the right and the right...The Mullahs would do better to stay out of it, and to maintain their traditional position as the power behind the throne...They don't want to be the puppets..They want to be the puppeteers..Who can blame them???....Thanks...Sweeney

Pat, you are correct. Now call Hannity and talk some sense into his head.
