On the subject of universal health care a la Canada, France, etc, I keep asking the candidates when someone is going to do an actual dollars and cents analysis of whether it is more costly for the average family to purchase health insurance, either individually or through an employer, or if they would be better off paying more in federal/state taxes to cover health care. Everyone keeps talking about "insurance", while what we need is CARE! I work as a medical transcriptionist and I constantly hear medical providers dictate that the patient has not filled prescriptions or obtained the tests they need because they don't have health insurance and can't afford to get their medicine or tests. Patients take half their medications so they don't have to buy more of it. They don't get regular gynecological exams or mammograms unless they can do it through a free or low-cost clinic. When is this country going to come to its senses, dump the health insurance industry and do the right thing for its citizens? And by the way.....medical insurance pays for Viagra and fights against paying for oral contraceptives. Do we see a pattern here?
