The Most Dangerous Topic: Race

by Matt Towery

As a pollster, I truly don't care who wins the presidency. I can't allow myself to do that. This makes my former Republican colleagues angry and Democrats suspicious.

What I offer is analytical opinions, and I'll offer one on Barack Obama and his pastor.

First, an admission on my part. Unlike the other two major presidential candidates, I have never spent time with Sen. Obama, or spoken with him by phone. This has simply been a matter of scheduling and availability. And it's too ...

Sir, Mr. Obama may not have the same grievance as every black person in America who was sold out of Mother Africa and down the Mississipee; but I will offer that if he has lived here with a suntan he knows the heat of resentment, and frustration that is out there. The thing is, that we are all frustrated with our inabilityto talk passed the racial divide. We cannot properly call ourselves a nation divided as we are, and we will never know our true strength until we can become one people. I think the notion of race is pure poison to Mr. Obama in the general election. White men feel they have no reason to vote for any black man. If race is left out of the equasion, if you can take the man for what he is, you can see a man without a slave mentality, meaning he is the same as a white man, and also, an intelligent and articulate man regardless of race. I think the issue has to be addressed, and he may be the ideal man to do that. I find it hartening that he has read the preamble of the constitution. Not one person in government; not President, not Congress, and not even the Supreme Court ever give lip service to the preamble. It may be, that in the light of the goals this country has set for itself it has been a miserable failure. No person, and no country wants to be reminded of its shortcomings. But there it is in black and white, and no one can say how or when we will reach our goals.
