Sir;...What the house and senate rejected they have rejected often, and unconstitutionally; and that is democracy. Democracy is self rule. The state of the art in government was what we started with: One representative for every thirthy thousand. That is a nice ratio.... If a man wants to be a man of the people that is a small enough group to get to know. And some one could almost get to know thirty thousand, and have common interests and needs with them. The house wanted to be powerful rather than representative, and finally, set its numerical limit so that the ratio of representatives now stands close to one for every six hundred thousand. I don't think this problem would ever have come about if we were democratic. Who would vote for the situation we find ourselves in? If the house and the government as a whole rejects the will of the people and throws good money after bad, it deserves to follow the money it debases into the past. We need democracy. We need self government. Surely, this is not self government. Sending representatives to be corrupted is immoral. If we sent many, a few corrupt could not spoil the rest. We should send representatives in such numbers that their price will never be met, so that the value of their virtue exceeds the value of their vote. The rich are getting their government cheap, and we are getting ours dear. We should grasp the fact that if our fore father could afford government of great numbers representing few numbers when their technology was primitive, and there was no infrastructure, bridges, roads, or sewars, and little manufacture; then we should be able to do as well. It is a poor substitute for a direct democracy -which we could manage, but this direction we have been going is anti democracy, and not democracy. Can you see with what impunity they do as they please avoiding what they fear, which is an accounting. No democratic government should ever fear justice. Ours lives in terror of justice....Thanks...Sweeney
