The Last Row of the Plane

by David Sirota

A recent flight I took was, like most these days, completely packed. About 100 fellow travelers and I were crammed into a way-too-small coach cabin. But when I stood up for a moment, I discovered we were all making our situation worse.

Looking out over the rows, I saw that almost all aboard had pushed their seats back, invading the space of those behind them. This was bad for everyone. As any flier knows, the benefit of reclining is more than offset by the inconvenience of having a str ...

While any effort on global warming is laudible, you shouldn't trust Inslee. His interest is self serving. He wants to be governor of Washinton State or Energy Secretary in the next Democratic administration. He is willing to support the war in Iraq toward that end and support the DLC's anti-impeachment strategy. He uses energy to change the subject and promote his career. I have seen him lie to his constituents and obfuscate. It's sad but true. He's gone over to the dark side. He needs to be replaced.

We have destroyed our democracy and our surroundings by not having "manners." Miss Manners in an interview: Cole: Where do you draw that line, though? Martin: Where do you draw that line, yes. And America has never decided. Cole: I was just thinking . . . My father's highest accolade about somebody was that he was a gentleman. Martin: Exactly. But in court societies you'd be a gentleman by birth no matter how you behaved. That's the point about America--you have to behave like a gentleman to be a gentleman. And surely that is a superior system.

How about all the rich and super-rich setting examples for the rest of the country? I mean, with their private jets and mega-mansions, they use more of our resources than the average citizen does who just uses them to stay warm and get himself/herself back and forth to work and to the grocery store! Why is Gore beating the drum for greening of the planet, when his utility bills hover in the area of $2,000/month? For some of us, that would cover a whole year's worth of home energy consumption! I'm tired of the famous lecturing to the average Americans about energy conservation, when they turn around and use up more of the energy than probably 100 average citizens do!
