The common denominator to so many of Mr. Sowell's articles is the lack of responsibility of those whose complaints we hear loudly amplified by the politicians whose professional existences depend on getting votes from those complainers. For them it is easier to demand and expect help than to help themselves. In fact, that might be the path of least resistance, except for a conscience-guided integrity taught since childhood, for many more to follow when more such opportunities are presented.
The lack of personal responsibility we see in our society today is a direct result of a corresponding lack of tough love instilled in the early years of a person's life.
Responsibility cannot be legislated, but the consequences for a person not acting responsibly would deliver the same results. What we need is a political atmosphere guided by tough love rather than the equivalent of momentarily satisfying a crying child with what he wants instead of what he needs.

An excellant article and your point is well taken. It is my opinions that even our universities no longer care whether a student actually learns anything viable as long as they can pay for the ride. This trend has lead us to the brink of oblivion.
