Stubborn Ignorance

by Walter E. Williams

Here's what the U.S. Constitution says: "All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills." How many times have we heard politicians, pundits and guardians of our news media say that President Bush cut taxes, or Obama is going to raise taxes? The fact of the matter is that presidents have no power to raise or lower taxes. They can propose tax measures or veto them but it is Congress ...

Mr. Williams I wonder what the tax reform fiasco of 1986 did to our economy in the short and long run. I know for myself it ruined ten years of financial planning and left me with more debt than I needed. Before 1986, I was encouraged to invest in this country and have a choice in making my money work or handing it over to the tax man. Since 1986, I have been trying to catch up by inflating the value of my business or depend on real estate. I was lured into a bigger home by the only thing I could reasonably deduct, mortgage interest and property taxes. Fortunately, I sold the big house and its mortgage and moved into a smaller dwelling, that I paid cash for, well before the current meltdown. Again, I feel the 1986 mission of the democrats to erase or plug up tax loopholes caused the failure of Savings and Loans shortly after and now twenty plus years later the "turkeys" have come home to roost.

Dear Mr. Williams: What a refreshing article. See, I really needed to get that information refreshed in my mind. Thanks...I really believe that so few of us really have an understanding of what our govt. is supposed to do and how to do it. What you just wrote put a lite on so many facts and opinions I heard today after AIG went belly up. So many to blame, don't know who's right and who's wrong. I love our President and find it nauseating to hear him being crucified by so many. I'm not sure what all he has done so wrong and I hope I never find out. He prays each morning to God and that makes me so happy. I truly believe we are on God's side in most things that the Pres has recommended. I met a man while flying to NY at Easter time. He travels globally so he has picture of America from many countries. He told me why he believes Bush will be remembered as one of our great Presidents. I can't remember all he said but I believed him and what he said seemed to make so much sense. We will survive this slump and come out better for it........thanks again for the article...Yours Truly, Janie
