Sir;... I could not learn to read, so I failed the first grade... When I did learn to read I read comic books at every opportunity.... Then I read playboys, but only the pictures... Then I read fiction... Then about fiction... Then about criticism.... Then Psychology, Theology, Magic, Symbolism, Myth; Anthropology and finally moving into history and philosophy... I own more dictionaries than many people have books in their libraries, and I still can't spell... My books fill book shelves on three floors in my house, and still spill out onto tables, and stairways, and floors....I told some one once that Dr. Suess taught me how to read, and she said: Great... Did you get anything signed by him??? I don't care if my kids want to read toilet paper... I don't care if they want to read the Bible...Hell; I am learning to read it in Greek... It does not matter what people read; but that they read because sooner or later they can turn that ability to self education... I have rebuilt motors and transmissions, and carburators with a book in hand... I have some formal education... It was very expensive, and too hasty for my mind... I don't want an education on a treadmill....I just to want to know... I don't want to have the indignity of having to trade my education for an income... In fact; if I had to, I would starve.... I may have the equivalent, at fifty-five, of a decent liberal arts education minus a fluency with a foreign language.... What is that in a society with no respect for liberals, or the liberal arts??? I would say it is a mistake for any society to believe it is all about money... To charge so much for an education makes every educated person believe he, or she owes nothing to society... I have paid next to nothing for my education, and I recognize that I owe it all to society... Even the best of us can add not a wit to the knowledge of society, but society educates us all, from cradle to grave...Everyone should learn to read...No one should let their education interfere with their learning... I am doing my best to teach a Chinese woman to read English... She wants to be an American Citizen... It is my pleasure to help...After all; the Chinese taught me to read my tax forms...Thanks...Sweeeney
