Wag the Dog was co-written by David Mamet, but directed by Barry Levinson.

Actually, theater attendance has been declining steadily for years. Individual films are breaking records (thanks in no small part to wildly inflating ticket prices) but overall, the box office is suffering thanks to illegal copies and the increasing quality and affordibility of home theaters.
