I simply can't understand why anyone thinks the U.S. should have "open borders." Control of borders and access to national territory is a fundamental element of national sovereignty. Advocates of "open borders" often try to demonize those of us who know that borders must be controlled as anti-immigrant or even racist. That's pure horse puckey. I understand the role of immigrants in contributing to and shaping the nature of America. I think we should always welcome them, with obvious restrictions against undesirables (e.g., criminals). But we have to control our borders and points of entry into the U.S. Let them in, both the skilled and the unskilled, and honor and value them for the contributions they make to America. But make them enter legally, and never forget that the first responsibility of any government is to guard the interests of the nation, regarding immigration as well as all other matters.
