Race and Politics

by Thomas Sowell

There is something both poignant and galling about the candidacy of Barack Obama.

Thomas Sowell, you are a beautiful person. By stealing the white racists' thunder you do more to convince those that really need to be convinced than all the liberals in the world. I'm so tired of people who define themselves by race whether black, white, or any other. It is so nice to have a few people in the world like you who recognize race for what it is, a condition of our birth. It is nothing to be proud of any more than something for which we should feel shame. This is not to say that we are not affected by our race. I sometimes wonder if I had been born black instead of white and had to endure all the racism that blacks of my age (60) have, that I might be more like Jeremiah Wright than you. I know you would rather talk about economics and don't like giving interviews because you get quoted out of context, but the world needs you now. Whereas I, as an individualist, certainly recognize that you are under no obligation to save humanity, I would really like to see you on the talk show circuit. I'm afraid that if religion doesn't destroy us first racism will. Wade Mathias
