I'm very dedicated to saving energy (electricity or fossil fuels) but mostly the money for the fuels we have to spend. The "environment" is not much of a concern- we'll let other people take care of those worries (if they are a real problem). I've used CFL's since the mid '90s and have found a very large problem with them- they DO NOT last more than a year. You do spend quite a bit extra for them but the desire to save energy is offset quickly by the fact that these bulbs do not last long. Like I said...maybe a year.
Another BIG problem is the "color" of the lights. They DO NOT provide a "day light" spectrum. My wife HATES that.
Disposal? I could care less. Throw them out however you want.
